This economy was on the fast track to nowhere well before Obama took office. He basically took over flying a plane that had no wings and was in a nosedive. His administration has done next to naught as well, but it's pretty clear that what is killing the country is military spending. Take a look at this and tell me if this makes sense to you:

Military Expenditure by Country

You keep up that sort of spending year after year, and see where it gets you. Then you have to wonder how much is not documented, and then you wonder further, why countries like China and Russia manage cutting edge military technology, and yet spend a fraction of what the U.S. does. We stick our noses into too many other's business. If the "oil angle" is true, it certainly isn't making up for the massive military spending.

"Defense" spending is the elephant in the room no one wants to talk about. Let's cut corners in schools, social security, let's slowly erode what used to make this country great.. for the sake of being the worlds peacekeeper. Let's see how that works out in the long term.

Defense spending will decrease.
We should also raise the retirement age to 68. Hmmm...how much would that save us?
We should follow the Paul Ryan plan.
Repeal ObamaCare to remove uncertainty.

Was sitting here, reading on ATS, and watching Dow plunge on CNN on TV...all power just went out. No storms of nature around here...still have UPS back-up for computers....

To you Obama supporters. Don't you think it's embarrassing that all the President can do is stand up there and read blame off of teleprompters. He's an embarrassment.
He's the captain of a sinking ship blaming the crew.

Did you -honestly- think that ANY administration in office this term, was going to do something amazing and turn around the economy? Seriously?

I told my wife as he was being sworn in, that he was a brave but foolish man.. he was jumping aboard a sinking ship, and there was no way possible he and his administration would be able to bail water fast enough to avoid sinking. NONE.

I laugh at folks who suggest it's Obama's "fault" - it wouldn't matter WHO was in office, no one could have 'saved the day' as some of you think was possible. He didn't do naught to fix the problem.. and no one else could have either.
WOW I knew there were people out there that belive this sort of thing but never saw anybody admit it.

Your saying that everything Obama said he was going to do during the campaign to at least stop the country from going where it is now must have been a lie or he and all his advisors are just idiots, yet it is not his fault in any way...........not trying to put words in your mouth so this is more a question then a statement.

Your intentions are obvious. Research the role of corporations in early america and get back to me on if what I said has anything to do with communism. lol I won't join your game of name calling.

Yea, but that is not as fun as saying I am spouting communist ideas... lol.

Learn some US history. But you are right, if we are stupid about it, we would open the market for large global corps to rape us. Let's hope US business owners are not as stupid as you assume. Obviously, my previous statement alone would not be enough, though I never claimed it would be?!?

My best guess is you either didn't understand what I was saying or you don't know US History very well. Which one is it? Maybe both?

Also, what is this "side" you claim I am on? Any "side" you see me on is a construct of your mind. I have claimed no side and hardly even know what you are talking about.

ETA: the only thing I was saying in my OP was that we would be better off with a million small, local businesses than 1 large, one size fits all global corporation. Much like it was before all the original protections against corporations growing to large were lifted in US law. Please explain to me how that is communist in nature?

The market has been on a downward spiral for a while. On June 30, 2011 the DOW was at 12,414.34. As of right now it is at 10983.01. That is about a 12% drop in just over 30 days. That is huge! How can Nobama stand there and spew how we are recovering!?

What a dufus! His economic advisers really need to keep him up to speed!

That's a good analogy. Obama is rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic instead of
trying to plug the hole in the hull of the ship!
----------------
The big picture is that - Obama wants the ship to sink -. Shhhh.....
Then George Soros can ride in on his great white horse and give us his Master Plan for
the USA.

i am so sick and tired of hearing that nonsense defense spending the elephant in the room?

try social security medicare and medicaid and the prescription drug plan that costs skyrocket with the progression of age in the us population.

to the tune of over 100 trillion dollars that can never be paid for.,

you cut defense put millions out of work destroy trillions of wealth creation and end up putting more people on that big 4.

people think of the larger picture.

I just want to say that whoever was elected the office of President last election was going to go through this. However the racist PTB made sure it was a black man to prove that blacks are still not as good as the whites in "The White House" It makes me sick. I can't believe he ran in the first place. It was political suicide on Obama’s part. Our country hasn’t progressed a bit in the last 100 years. So blame him all you what.... This was going to happen anyway. BTW….I’m white.

Plenty of blame to go around. It's just that he decided he wanted to be leader of our country, said the economy was his responsibility, and now has to bear the brunt of his decision.

He was/will be going to disclose that he is un-friending from FarceBook: Shrub, Dick, Donnie, Condo-lisa, H. Kissinggame, the crew at S&P, Geithner, Bernanke and China friendly wanna-bes.

Then he will be asking for donations of paper and ink to feed the the printing presses at the Fed.

That is quite a hypotheses. That a black man was put into office to fail.
Were all the people that voted for Obama in on this too?

Well, I see obama The Destroyer's speech impressed the worlds nations, as of now the stocks are at 10873. Way to go obama. After his speech, did he go back to the golf course or back to finish his birthday party? Cause his mind sure isn't on helping the country, but then again it never was.

I agree with what you are saying. The sad truth is that the US economy is largely dependent on war profits. That is something that really bothers me. whatever the solution is to our problems, that is something that will have to be corrected.

I think the previous Bush election confirms that it doesnt really matter what the votes are, TPTB will get the man they want in to the white house.

US stock market closed down 634 !!!

Long live Obama the socialist. That speech really showed leadership.

He lead us straight down the drain!
Obama should resign tomorrow.

My guess is Lulla...

Pretty sure Lulla was heavily involved in the discrepancy.

I'm putting money on ties to Bush linked through Cheney.

I really need to take a break from ATS, the more I read the more of an impression I'm getting of where we're heading and the more PO'd I get. 10809.85 a 634 point drop. If it were anyone else in the White House the press would be beating down the doors demanding to know what he was going to do to fix this mess. Instead we have obama. What answers do we get? Blame President Bush, blame republicans, blame earthquakes, blames cats, dogs anything and everything except his failed policys. Granted some of this mess is Bush's, some. But obamas far from blameless too, but he's not man enough to accept the fact that being President means he can't pass the buck, it stops with him, period.

We get to watch everyone now and the ones all wired are Directly responsible for the mess.

"Tea party rules for the Obama speech: If he says, "Let me be clear." you have to chug the whole cup of tea. If he blames Bush you have to take a big drink each time. If he says compromise-two drinks. Blames American Ideology-three drinks"
