'Kill Team' Soldier Gets Three Years in Prison

abcnews.go.com

Adam Winfield, the Army specialist who warned his parents that soldiers in his unit were executing innocent Afghan civilians, pled guilty Friday to reduced charges and was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in one of the murders.

Winfield, 23, of Cape Coral, Fla., had been charged with premeditated murder, which carried a sentence of life in prison without parole.

Winfield agreed to a plea deal with military prosecutors at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state, and is exp.

Did you not even read your own OP? It says that that the penalty is life without parole, but he's only getting three years for a plea bargain.

Prosecutors allege that the Ft. Lewis-based Stryker brigade set up scenarios to kill unarmed Afghans, and then planted weapons to make the killings appear justified. Winfield had been charged with premeditated murder, but said he never fired his weapon at the victim. In his plea agreement, prosecutors accepted his defense.

Winfield contended that he had not shot the Afghan victim but had also not stopped his fellow soldiers from murdering an Afghan man just outside his home in southern Afghanistan.

Wheres the outrage over the ones who were doing the killing tho, or let me guess, you didn't read the article just the first 3 lines.

Winfield was the first to come forward about the alleged sport killings. He told his parents while deployed that members of his unit had planned and executed the killings for sport. He was charged with murder for his part in the third and final death in May of last year.

Military prosecutors are hoping Winfield's testimony in exchange for the plea agreement will help convict Gibbs, who is charged in all three Afghan deaths and believed to be the ringleader of the group.

Winfield and Morlock have told Army investigators that Gibbs developed and rehearsed the murder of unarmed Afghans and later ordered his men to help him carry them out. Gibbs, Wagnon and Holmes have each pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Is it enough for the innocent people that are now dead? How do you go from life in prison to 3 years? Throw this scum behind bars and keep him there. But no. Scum like this get out of the military and become cops and kill more innocent people on the streets of America.

Manning is far from a traitor you brainwashed twit. You want to see a traitor? Turn on mainstream media and watch the traitors to this country push their propaganda on the sheep. Go to an airport and watch the TSA sexually assault a 6 year old. Thats what a traitor looks like. But I guess its okay to hide corruption from the american people. It might embarrass the people killing innocents or stealing all the money.

Now now now, naming calling and all that....T&C and all. First, Manning in my opinion is a traitor, as are the TSA. This man turned the soldiers in, and yet you still whine. I said, he kind of did the right thing, and he did by doing just that. Not all troops leaving the military become cops, let alone cops that kill people. Grow up and face the facts, this country isn't perfect, but it's a damn sight better than just about anywhere else.

So anyone who disagrees with you is a troll? I guess that makes sense somehow in your mind, here in the real world it's called a difference of opinion.

Name calling and all that? How about trolling? I heard thats against the T&C also.

How exactly is Manning a traitor? He is being tortured in a US prison for doing what he swore to do when he took an oath to the constitution.

In what way am I trolling? I asked a simple question and you decided to show how ignorant you can be. Manning is a traitor, nothing in his oath said to do what he did. Ever served son? Just asking, and I bet I already know the answer. He and his ilk deserve everything they are getting now plus some. The world doesn't revolve around you, or your kind, and believe it or not others have differing opinions....grow up, he did the right thing and you are pissed because things didn't go the way you think they should. One last thing son, join the military, or seek elected office, make the change you so desperately seek, because whining behind your monitor online won't do a damn thing, but you already knew that huh?

All I can say is wow? Rather harsh words. I have served in the military myself, and I do not see manning as a traitor, his commander in chief yes, him, no. I would much rather see the one responsible for this to be held far more accountable. I agree his anger may be a bit misdirected and perhaps confused about the "facts" in the case. But it doesn't matter that he didnt pull the trigger, he knew about it and didn't stop it. 3 years in Leavenworth should be plenty punishment enough.

You are either trolling or are completly ignorant to the information that Manning actually released. It isnt really surprising that you would support attack helicopters killing innocent people though considering that you believe it to be okay for this man to be released after 3 years for doing the exact same thing.

I see a helicopter killing innocent people and a soldier coming out and speaking against it. I then see that same soldier being thrown in a US prison while being tortured. Now I see another soldier that could have stopped the killing of innocent people and did nothing. You defend both. Im the moron.

Thanks for clearing this up.

You're more than welcome, you need help with the enlistment office phone number? Perhaps a little basic understanding of the supposed innocents killed by the helicopter might clear your confusion. How about investigating it rather than jumping on the I'm cool I hate the military bandwagon.

Source, please. I want the source that proves that individuals in the military that commit murder are released after their sentence and become police officers and kill more people.

I want to see one instance of this happening.

Yes, Manning is a traitor. And calling someone a brainwashed twit doesn't make it any better.

No it's a troll statement because you attempted to derail the thread by throwing in something you knew people would instantly latch on to and have very strong opinions about. It was a joke, lighten up dude (but it was totally a troll move even if you were unawares).
