Now, this isn't my field of expertise, but I would suspect that yes, this is the kind of statement that would typically require proof. Is there some reason a priori why people should just accept that almost every King or Queen in Europe are descendants of Charles Martel?

Well if royals intermarry and sex to keep the bloodline pure it wouldn't really suprise me if they were all related to the same original family.
