I don't see the point you are making. Kids see adult themes such as smoking and alcohol in mainstream culture...but is it an issue that is accepted? No it is not.

What influence is the media having on our children? or for that matter, society as a whole?

This isn't about that though... the thread is about the use of child actors in violent movies, children acting out adult themes!!

In butterfly effect the KIDS WERE SMOKING !!! they weren't pretending to smoke!!!

Except the kids aren't actually being forced into anything. And camera tricks are used in situations, sometimes they aren't even present when the adult actor is speaking.

Big difference compared to Father McLeod playing that game with kids after Sunday school finishes...

I am yet to read anything you have posted that shows evidence of abuse from producers, or anyone else involved in shooting film.

As I said in another post, camera tricks are used, children are not even present when adult actors are in scenes with them sometimes. And a guardian or parent is usually there. They are also monitored by child labour organizations.1

Here is one Theatre house that explains what they do to protect the youth that are in their adult themed production:

Where are the child actors during the adult scenes in the play? The child actors are in a large dressing room with the monitors off. They go backstage and on-stage when prompted by the child wrangler and then go back to their play area in the dressing rooms. Do you know 100 percent that it was a nicotine cigarette they were smoking, or did it just look like one? I wasn't involved in the production so I don't know, but I do know dummy cigarettes are used for kids in movies.

i am actually conflicted when it comes to this topic. I do agree that the reason why so many child actors grow up to have so many issues as young adults is because they are forced to grow up so young in the way of grasping adult concepts in order to act them out on screen.

BUT

having said that, i also think that Kirsten Dunst was PHENOMENAL as Claudia in Interview With the Vampire. And because this movie was based on a book - there was no taking the child out of the storyline. The whole reason Anne Rice created the character Claudia was because she had just lost her own daughter to leukemia at the age of 6.

And Blatty's Exorcist simply could NOT have been turned into a movie without a child actor. And Blair nailed the part.

I can't imagine my movie-life being complete without these two movies.

regarding that movie thirteen. i HATE that movie. my daughter has always loved that movie. we argued about it many, many times when she was a teen. i don't feel like it is my job to police other parents, nor do i feel that i am perfect enough as a parent to make judgments about how others choose to raise their children - we ALL make parenting mistakes that we don't realize are mistakes until later... or sometimes never. If i see a child being physically abused, i will step in... other than that, hey... its YOUR future therapy bill, not mine. lol. If you want to let your kid act in a film that is full of adult situations... that's YOU. I, however, can choose not to allow my child to watch it. it's just that simple.

THis may surprise you, but... children aren't hothouse orchids. Now I suppose under our current system of laws that present children as more akin to pets or houseplants than individual human beings, you are within your rights to wrap your offspring in layers of bubble wrap, and lock them in the basement to enjoy a steady diet of boiled rice and "VeggieTales" so as to protect them from the harsh realities of, well, reality. But pretty much everyone else has managed to grow up in this reality we have and the overwhelming, vast majority of humanity is pretty well-adjusted, despite hte crazy stuff going on.

Your position - that child actors smoking or being present while adults are cursing - is some how "terrible" shows more about your own emotional fragility than anything else.

Yes because the parents have no influence whatsoever, so they should blame Hollywood, and we should be mad. Cause they took err jobs... I mean, they took err kids!

It's been awhile since I have seen that movie so I'm not sure what scene you are referring too. But if it is a a 16+ year old they should be old enough to go through with a adult content scene if they are comfortable doing it.

(You should see some of the theme's drama students do...)

If it was younger I doubt the child was present in the scene. Or the voice and the visual were shot separately. And of course, no, just cause someone looks naked on TV does not mean they were naked during shooting...

Go watch Bewitched, you will be amazed they know how to make people disappear.

Given that I have an interest in film making, I always criticize the scene or wonder how a scene was done. But that is irrelevant, the movie you are talking about is obviously not intended for a child audience whether or not a child participated in the filming of it.

If you don't want your kids to watch it, then don't let them. Problem solved..

Is nudity something to be terrified of? Do you have a moral panic every time a Charmin commercial shows a naked baby's butt? Do you have a fit if a five year old girl wears swim trunks in the wading pool instead of a one-piece?

Issue is not about what my kids watch...issue is children acting out adult themes AND acting out illegal activities for a movie production...

Filming a child naked acting out role play with implied sexual connotations is against the law... how did the producers get away with that?
