Here is a recent picture, August 19th.
Behaving and looking perfectly normal, as expected, no spaceships in formation, no brown dwarf star.

SO MUCH FOR DOOMSDAY: Comet Elenin (C/2010 X1), widely known for inaccurate reports of its threat to Earth, appears to be breaking apart. Observations by amateur astronomer Michael Mattiazzo of Castlemaine, Australia show a rapid dimming and elongation of the comet's nucleus akin to that of Comet LINEAR (C/1999 S4), which also disintegrated when it approached the sun in 2000. Comets are fragile objects, so this development while unexpected comes as no surprise. Readers with pertinent images of Elenin are invited to submit them here.

It's complicated. Film sees things differently than human beings do. Charge Coupled Devices see things differently than both film and the human eye. Nowadays, people can choose how they want things to look when they take a picture.

It will have some blue colour in it due to the Hydrogen Cyanide that it is gassing off.

I'm so jealous of that comet. Getting to travel through beautiful space at that speed.

When I die I want to come back as a comet.

I'd probably try to send a message to frightened people saying not to worry I'm just on a sight seeing tour...

Never mind, they'd all freak out anyways...

I want to be a comet.

ROFL, out of all the things to reincarnate into....but very nice choice.

Im a bit glad people have kind of freaked out over this thing, look how many people are looking up at the sky now, and interested in astronomy. Now hopefully some will change their views from learning more about it, especially after it passes without a hitch....but some will never change.

I wonder how many people are thinking of going to buy their first telescope, I sure am. Great pics, I can't believe I missed these.

Perfection.

One of my favorite memories from childhood was seeing Hale-Bopp. *sigh* I'd love to see something like that again.

Not this time.
But if you were a kid when Hale-Bopp came by your chances are good.

I was a kid...13 years old I think. I was living in Northern British Columbia, Canada at the time. I'm not sure but shouldn't it make a reappearance somewhere between 74-79 years later?

I'll be pretty old by then...however I'd make the effort to hobble out to see it. That is if it doesn't decide to suddenly become self aware and steer itself into a crash course collision straight for Earth.

What a way to go though...

I don't think Hale-Bopp is going to be around for anyone who's alive now, it was a "new" comet. That's what I meant, we never know when the next new one will arrive.

Of course, the next one could get closer than is healthy.
