I remember my family first got the Internet back in.. 1998 I believe, the speeds were just 8kb/sec, and I thought that was fast and life changing back then.

Geek 1: Dude! I got one of those new 28.8 modems.

Geek 2: OMG how is it.

Geek 1: Awesome. You can download an entire hard drive in just one day!

Geek 2: OMG no way!

( back then a hard drive was about 4 megs)

Usenet!!! that was dope! I would start downloading music and then I would go to bed and the wake up to see Dark Side of the Moon still at 89%.

Then after it was downloaded. I would brag and say "Hear that? I got it for free!"

Haha that's wild, I remember my first hard drive (when I was 5) was 1.3 gig (pretty top end PC) and we got our first 56k modem like a year later.

it will be interesting to try and explain to kids that there used to be no internet.

they won't be able to wrap their minds around that.

assuming the end of the civilized world doesn't happen soon

I remember:

Getting kicked off AOL for being abusive in the chat rooms or something. Now the idea of your ISP banning you from getting online, but still charging you, just because of a little harsh language is utterly ridiculous. However, this may soon be changing. Everything's in cycles, it seems.

The dial-up sound. It made the internet feel POWERFUL! Something really crazy was going on, and that noise told the story. SCREAAAA SCHHHHHHHH SCHHHHHHHHHHHH KKKKKCSHHHH

Getting kicked offline when someone picked up the phone. Getting a second phone line because nobody could ever get a hold of me. Being extremely happy when I found a program that would allow people calling you to leave a message ON YOUR COMPUTER! HOW INSANE. ALIEN TECHNOLOGY. Seemed like it at that time, at least. Then going back to one phone line again.

When there wasn't free, high quality porn videos easily available everywhere. At least not that I could find, back then.

Stealing music off the internet before anyone cared.

My father telling me he was talking to people on the computer. This was before AOL or anything and "the internet" was just a DOS looking screen. I thought he had lost his mind.

Using the eight thousand AOL trial CDs they would send you every week for target practice with my .22

These are not really in chronological order, but I think they all still qualify as the "old web"

Cool thread BTW, it's always fun thinking about these type of things.

Ah,
The sound of dial up when it finally stooped and connected. Warez without the threat of being found. Not having to wade through the "ad sites" that now replace the results in searching. Various chatrooms(a/s/l checks every few mins ), as social networking. Not having to type in a security code or home phone/cell to post somewhere/access e-mail.

BBS pre that time that family had introduced me to.
