" The Tao of Pooh" Benjamin Hoff
" Jonathan Livingston Seagull " and other great books by Richard Bach
The reason is; these books are based on philosophy , although somewhat simpleminded , they are quite enjoyable reads and philosophy is the basis for all spiritual conquests.
Personally , I would suggest anything along the lines of Buddhism , Toaism or other philosophical based spirituality to get a strong foundation before the outright confusing , intimidating nature of organized religion. There is also a good documentary " Oh My God" , about a guy who goes around the world asking what is god? www.youtube.com...
Good luck

The following are some of what have helped me get closer to God:

ANGELS ON ASSIGNMENT--TRUE LIFE NARRATIVE--AVAILABLE ONLINE FREE:

www.angelsonassignment.org...

It really described the Father God of the Bible in a very healing and helpful way to me.

MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST

By Oswald Chambers--actually from shorthand notes his wife took of his sermons--excerpted by her into a devotional format--is one of the best classics I know of. But I can only take him for spurts at a time. He's heavy duty. Very Biblical. For decades whenever CHRISTIANITY TODAY has surveyed Christian leaders about what book besides the Bible has meant the most to their Christian walk--that one has won hands down.

A CLASSIC short treasure is:

SAMUEL MORRIS: THE MARCH OF FAITH

About a tortured African son of a chief. The neighboring tribes had warred for centuries. The tradition was that the chief's son of the losing tribe was captured and tortured until a suitable ransome was paid. One night--given that Sammy was the chief's son of the typically losing tribe, he was yet again tied to a stake in a small clearing and barely alive from the torture.

In the middle of the night, he hears a voice:

GET UP AND RUN.

He's barely able to breathe . . . he thinks he's hallucinating.

A 2nd time he hears a voice:

GET UP AND RUN.

he's convinced he's hallucinating--he's hanging by his bonds limp against the pole, barely alive.

A 3rd time, he hears:

I SAID GET UP AND RUN. And suddenly he discovers that his bonds are loosened and he has energy--he quickly runs into the jungle. For 2 weeks the voice and a light leads him to food and water and eventually to a walled mission compound. There, the voice says: IN THERE, YOU WILL LEARN OF ME.

He only lived to about age 22. But his impact was incredible. He would walk into the back or a hidden side entrance of a large auditorium to speak. And the second he crossed the threshhold--unknown to the audience, 100's would run screaming to the front repenting of their sins.

If she truly wants to get closer to the divine, have her give Eckhart Tolle's "A New Earth" a read. It's spiritually enlightening without espousing any particular religious doctrine (in fact it points out how religious doctrine can lead one astray from becoming fully conscious). That should get her started out on the right path.

As some of you guys here on ats my know about me and the countless personal experiences i have posted about when it comes to finding God or the Absolute truth.

Well now my dillema is that my younger sister, 26, wants me to giveher a basic book that describes sort of a how to guide to get closer to God. And i cant think of one.

Here i am studying nonduality, gnostics, plato, majamudra, desert fathers and all the deepest philosopho-mystical-theological hardcoreness i can find and having myself all these profound insights and God like experiences but this request completely stumps me.

As for my sis, shes been to church and likes to read all those stupid true blood and eclipse vamp book series. So someting more along the lines where you can follow a character as they get closer to God would probably be best. Shes has experience when relaxing in a bath to go deep within and in letting go and has also had fleeting mystical experiences before......... just as somewhat of a background.

Any suggestions?

Tell her to pack it in and behave herself... Any person that needs a book to tell them what to do and how to live their lives, is a weak minded individual. Come Christmas time next year, she won't need any book to get closer to god, trust me!!

Good suggestions as far as books go. She might be interested in the 'Screw tape letters' by C.S. Lewis but mere Christianity is a great book to start with. C.S. Lewis was an atheist, and gives his own personal reasons why he could no longer continue in the state he was in.
