At least 122 firearms from a botched U.S. undercover operation have been found at crime scenes in Mexico or intercepted en route to drug cartels there...

...the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and federal prosecutors had hoped the sting would help them track gun buyers reselling weapons to cartels. But U.S. ATF agents did not see many of the purchases or follow many of the guns after the initial purchaser re-sold them.

Well this is a mess. "Operation Fast and Furious" was initiated in 2009 track guns bought in the US for Mexican drug cartels. But a few years on, we can see that the government has lost track of the guns. Half are totatally unaccounted for and we can see from the article that a large number are in use.

This is being used to make partisan hay and bash the Obama administration but that is foolish to me because this is an agency-level issue and has very little to do with the president, IMHO. But if you can filter out the partisan hackery it is still a disturbing issue and raises all sorts of questions.

The article quotes Rep. Darrell Issa as follows: "It seems like you knowingly allowed these weapons to get out of your control, knowingly, to someone you knew was trafficking into Mexico..." Conspiracy? Or just gov't screwup as usual?
