LONDON, England (Reuters) -- A giant asteroid is heading for Earth and could hit in 2014, U.S. astronomers have warned British space monitors.

But for those fearing Armageddon, don't be alarmed -- the chances of a catastrophic collision are just one in 909,000.

Asteroid "2003 QQ47" will be closely monitored over the next two months. Its potential strike date is March 21, 2014, but astronomers say that any risk of impact is likely to decrease as further data is gathered

Which asteroid in particular? There's a number of them that will pass by us in 2014.

The one that shows up most commonly in these searches is the one that astronomers thought (based on a few observations) might actually hit Earth:

Better data from the LINEAR program (plus followup tracking data by astronomers, observatories, and amateurs) shows that it's not going to come that close to us:

This hasn't prevented some people from shrieking about it like they shriek about the asteroid Touatis... which also will come "sorta near" but won't actually hit us.

Yeah. I know. Takes all the fun out of this, doesn't it?
