You list info on emp's but you are talking about an electronic device.

How long could an e-reader last in the bush, btw Batteries are heavy!

I have a pair of every electronic device in my BOB in a safe location, shielded by a Faraday cage. If you don't know what that is, look it up, they just might be one of the best things you can build to prepare for the coming solar storms or the possibility of a nuclear attack and the resulting EMP.
As far as how long my ereader lasts, well... forever... I have a small solar charger. Did you read my post?

I thought of it as I am rather blind without glasses. A great way around glasses in an emergency is the pinhole effect. Test it yourself. Make a tiny pinhole through a piece of paper and look through it. If you have poor eyesight you will be amazed. There are pinhole glasses in which the entire lens is black except for numerous tiny pinholes, forcing your eyes to focus on individual holes which allows a bad lens in your eye to see clearly in most cases due to only a tiny part of your lens being used at a time rather than the overall lens, which is what you normally use. Some people use these glasses to allow their eye muscles to relax from the strain glasses often put on them as your eyes change throughout the day while your glasses lens doesn't, causing eye fatigue.

I did think of that, I have a pair of glasses that can stop a .22 round(at least that is what it says on the box)

After seeing a gentlemen's eye severley cut by a 'Wait-a-While' while hiking I thought it very prudent.

You have got to protect your weak points.

Pornography

What with dangerous bands running around, and most of the females in constant fear of becoming pregnant, plus the fact that no one is shaving or showering much, It may just be best to shake hands with an old friend, and move on.

Some of the classic stuff (Marilyn Monroe, Betty Paige) is already considered currency, by collectors.

But porn will be analogous to liquor after the SHTF, though. Nobody will care much about the quality, as long as it take you where you want to go.

I'm married with lots of kids, by the way. Just sayin'

One other thing I fail to see in these survial threads is know your neighbor. The good ones and especially the bad ones.

Being a little noisy could save you when bad times come.

An individual or a small family can be very vulnerable when the SHTF. The more trustworhty, awake people you know and plan with the better off you will be.

The way I see it, big cities will be the most dangerous places when all hell breaks loose. The smaller communities where everyone knows everyone will be the safest.

A private place out in the middle of nowwhere might be safest but without a sizeable group it can be your down fall if your all alone and you break your leg hunting for food.

Numbers will be the ultamate survial tool so know your neighbor, your freinds, and your enemies.

You can have the best B.O.B in the world but it nothing compared to good old fashion human being.

If you think about it and if we just took care of the people around us a little more instead having of this me me me mentality we have intergrained into oursleves. We might not have half the problems we have today.

BE SAFE..........

The funny thing is 75% of this forum including the US citizens are going to succumb to the fact that they really are unprepared to survive no matter how much equipment or good intentions they have. they just don't understand the complexities and aren't willing to do what is absolutely necessary due to morality and ethics.

its sad but true....SOWY

my opinion would to bring some non perishable food items to trade. safety goggles are a good idea too. tobacco is also a good one there will be a great demand for it IF 2012 happens.

For us women; chocolate or cocoa mix the like, still trying to find a way to preserve better from melting and more!

if you are in the states, choc is something very fleeting, godiva will not last long, although if you can make it from

cacao berries you would be VERY popular!

eta; if you were in the right place.

Funny you mention that. I bought a cocoa pod this year, and out of 37 seeds, 37 sprouted.

I gave away 3 trees, I currently have 34 cocoa trees on my porch about a foot and a half tall.

MATCHES is what i'd stock up on. Get the ones that are waterproof and can light on anything. Or, just get boxes of the original ones. MATCHES are easy to stock and worth more than gold. 1 MATCH can get you places. Also, if you wanna learn how to survive....get arrested. Learn the skills in prison....cuz that's EXACTLY what life would be like...if "they" were to turn off the switch.

Why not lighters? Because lighters use gas...and gas runs out.

Also, PEANUT BUTTER and JELLY, TOP RAMON SOUP, Mac and Cheese, Yeast, flour, rice, popcorn, RAZORS, Deodorant, socks, stockings, cards, batteries, bleach, iodine, band-aids, peroxide, toothpaste. Basically, anything that can be stored for decent amount of time, multi-purposeful, and takes up very little space.

it does not only make food sweet, it is also the only food that won't get bad with time and it can be spread over an injury to prevent infection

Cool, a 12v solar charger.

I know what a faraday cage is and function, but to be honest I'm not an expert, do you have to ground the 'cage'?

There are differing opinions on whether or not you need to ground a Faraday Cage. I'm on the fence as to whether or not you have to. My portable cage obviously isn't grounded. My main storage area consists of only a metal trash can that is well sealed and partially filled with desiccant to pull any moisture out of the air and then buried under several feet of dirt in a carefully selected area. Of course, because the can is solid steel and is underground, it is grounded and will withstand any EMP of any magnitude. The portable cage may be pointless, especially if I'm using the device when the EMP hits, but it doesn't hurt, and only cost me a few bucks to make. Besides, I do have a backup of all of my info and electronics in permanent storage.

Anyone thought of flea treatment??????? I don't know what the old fashioned remedy is, but I would bet my last pound that it would be pretty useful for the individual, also as currency.

Basic living, no irons, few boil washes, fleas will be a big problem. They can spread disease too I think. We can catch and grow food, with less difficulty than you may think, but we would need to be as healthy as possible. Couldn't work or sleep properly with those things biting away night and day

Cool thread!

One item I have in my BOB that I've not noticed on anyone's list is binoculars.

I have a pair of 16 x 32 that are about the same size/weight as a basic first aid kit.

You can't eat binoculars but if one is short of energy then taking a closer look at something curious in the distance could prevent wasting a trip.

Also, they can be used for surveillance and hunting and possibly signalling.

A few more not-so-considered items:

Blade sharpener
Gas mask
Pencil & paper
Hat

I have reason to believe that 'tshtf' scenario will be very hot and/or very cold. The weather and terrain may change drastically wherever one lives so I'll advise that we all prepare for any climate.
