it looks like theres a flare happening on the other side of the sun or another bright object has passed infrunt of the sun but not many things can do that so im staying with a solar flare

And why was subtraction employed a couple frames before the cme to the present but not in any of the frames previous?

Here is the official word from SOHO:

On July 22nd, Lasco processed new background subtraction images to account for the SOHO roll on this date. You can see the difference very easily by looking at a C3 image from July 22 at 05:06 UT next to an image of July 22 23:42 UT. The "pylon" which holds the occulting disk over the sun in the center is extending from the top right of the images on the early image and extending from the bottom left on the late image.

Once SOHO was in the north roll position we processed a temporary background to clean up the C3 images. You can notice this in C2 also but it is not as large of a change. The artifact you see is the planet venus when it was sitting at the spot using the 2 images of July 22 and July 23. I took median brightness levels of all the images in those 2 days to make an average of intensity of each day then used those 2 days to make a subtraction image.

I hope this helps everyone make heads or tails of it.
