Funnily enough i just came back from watching a doco on the perfect magnitude 10 earthquake to find the news that PNG has just been hit by a 6.2 mag earthquake. Here are the stats;

This event has been reviewed by a seismologist.

Magnitude 6.2
Date-Time

Monday, July 25, 2011 at 00:50:50 UTC
Monday, July 25, 2011 at 10:50:50 AM at epicenter

Location 3.213°S, 150.672°E
Depth 34.5 km (21.4 miles)
Region NEW IRELAND REGION, PAPUA NEW GUINEA
Distances

73 km (46 miles) S (191°) from Kavieng, New Ireland, PNG
201 km (125 miles) NW (304°) from Rabaul, New Britain, PNG
359 km (223 miles) NNE (21°) from Kandrian, New Britain, PNG
566 km (352 miles) NE (46°) from Lae, New Guinea, PNG
794 km (493 miles) NNE (29°) from PORT MORESBY, Papua Ne

Activity along the west side of the pacific ring of fire has increased, multiple 6's in Japan and constant 5's in the Kermadecs north of New Zealand. Is it just me or are we seeing a rise in the larger earthquakes around the world. Puerto Rico also seems to be getting hit hard with constant 3's, 2's and 4's. Quite odd if you ask me. What do you all think?

Judge for yourself:

earthquake.usgs.gov...

However given the daily occurence of these quakes you should start to realize that it's just a normal occurence. Some years have more some have less but it's all part of the natural cycle. People just have access to instant earthquake information now so it seems like it's more common.

And yes now 6+ quakes are normal now and will be into the future when 7+ will be normal as well

Go look up the earthquake history for the 1950's and tell me how that fits into your theory of progressively stronger earthquakes throughout the years.

I dont know why you think that. We have had much worse years EQ wise (look at 2007). This year has not been that different with the exception of the tsunami that hit a nuke plant. I admit I watch the daily eq activity but hardly think that we really need to post on every quake above 6. Also notice 2007 how many 8 or above quakes juxtaposed to this year. We have a lot of catching up to do I would say.
