Have you taken a look at the radar? There are thunderstorms all over northern Illinois. The "flickering" is lots of lightning.

I have lived in Florida my entire life and heat lightning is completely normal here. It is usually not accompanied by thunder but occasionally it is, sometimes there can be a lot of lightning bolts visible across the sky and other times it can just be off in the distance just lighting up every so many seconds. Either way it is usually a nice light show.

Weather for Joliet, IL 81°F | °C Scattered Thunderstorms Partly Cloudy Wind: S at 7 mph Humidity: 82%

That is moist heat. Moisture in the atmosphere + heat generates energy. You guys are right on the border of the front that is creating the 'heat bubble'. That is where the most energy is.

Be careful- I know someone to the east of you who lost a lot of electronics in a lightning storm the other day. They said they never, in 70 years, had seen lightning like that.

i remember when i was 12, i was at my grandmas in iowa, and i was on the porch and the lightning looked like spiderwebs that would seam to stay around longer than normal lightning. however that was along time ago and its kinda fuzzy.

threads like this make me feel sorry for people whom ask these questions. its obvious they've missed out on some good light shows in there life. one of my earliest memories with the grandparents was sitting on the porch watching heat lightning. good times.

I have heard from friends on another forum that the weather in Chicago has been insanely hot this summer.. Here in East Texas it has been daily highs of 100F or higher for the last 21 days... I seem to remember that Al Gore explained the kinds of changes in weather we are now seeing... I also remember warnings of climate and natural disasters in mainstream publications back in 2009 or possibly earlier.... An hour or two outside anytime between 11:00 AM and 7:30 PM is about all I and people much younger than myself can handle.. I have seen longer and hotter periods but old age is making it much harder to deal with... The temperature heat index was 122F degrees in Washington DC yesterday.

Yes sudden spikes in heat can do damage on more thaan one level on this Earth.
Just lets all be cautious, as said before.
If I was in the USA now I would find strong shelter, but hopefully all will be Ok.
You have to go on your gut, your spirit , it may be wrong but not often.
Big storm coming perhaps.
