Apologies to anyone from Hartlepool in the U.K. on here. However legend has it that during the Napoleonic Wars a French ship floundered off Hartlepool and the ships monkey was discovered washed up on the beach the locals not being cognisant with French people hung the monkey as a spy. However in fairness most authorities cast doubt on the story. The people from there are still derided as the 'Monkey Hangers' though but most take it in good heart. Still serves as a faeble for this sort of ignorance one could say.
