Archaeologists in Peru have discovered the tomb of a lord of the Lambayeque culture, believed to have been an executioner due to the three ceremonial knives found buried with him.

July 15, 2011: A skull and bones sit on a pre-hispanic tomb recently discovered in Lambayeque, northern Peru. According to Carlos Wester, chief of the team of archaeologists who discovered the tomb, it belongs to a top lord of the Lambayeque culture, believed to have been an executioner.

Near the pre-Hispanic tomb were human remains, as well as ceremonial knives, ceramic pots, a dress made from native cotton and a series of rolled copper discs, said Carlos Wester, director of the Bruning Museum in Lambayeque and one of the tomb's discoverers.Wester told AFP the person buried there was most likely in charge of human sacrifice.

"We found the perfectly preserved tomb of a sacrificer of the Lambayeque culture, with copper machetes and human offerings laid around them," Wester told the news agency. The tomb was found in a place called "ceremonial fertility and water," two weeks ago in the archaeological complex Chotuna Chornancap, a thousand-year-old temple complex discovered in January 2010.

I don't know. Sure sounds convincing but it seems to me there is A LOT of wiggle room here. Anyway, for us folks that like this stuff, there you go. It will be interesing to see whatelse is uncovered there.

So much blood shed for what? You would think along the way Someone would have said.... "You know... this might not be to the best of our advantage.... lets try Not sacraficing people and see what happens?

Hmmm

Wow, I thogth this thread was particularly interesting due to speculation of the found person's occupation.

It just seems like such a fantastic find-in one way.

But, part of me just wants to say-how can they be so sure of these individuals they find and what that person did in their life. It is almost always so body important or interesting.

Just once I would like a discoverer say.... "This skelton are the remains of a common man, a janitor of the King of that time.....

I think perhaps that people of lesser rank would not be buried in temple complexes. That is were they seem to look also people of greater rank may be buried with some type of treasured grave goods. These seem to attract archeologists. None of them seem to care about the common folk at the time. Guess they are boring without treasure.

Well, yes. I see you point but I think a true digger would want to find any and all.

You never know where the next big break/clue/find maybe. A Diamond in the rough may hold the answers to the bigger things.

Time will tell. Maybe.

I think probably rather a lot of 'common man' remains are found but they just don't make the news because A. there are so many of them and B. they often aren't buried with anything that can tell you much about them. You can a story about a person thats buried with ceremonial daggers, a fleet of boats or 50 horses etc but there's not much to say about the pile of bones from pit 5 other than 'he had bad teeth and a peg leg'.

You can tell a story about a person that's buried with ceremonial daggers, a fleet of boats or 50 horses etc but there's not much to say about the pile of bones from pit 5 other than 'he had bad teeth' which isn't that thrilling.

I hear both of you and agree about a minon being found as to a Great leader or other type.

I am just saying they seem pretty quick to label everyone/thing they find with the greatest titles etc.

Maybe it's just me... but it seems that just about any old body we dig up may have some seriouse clues-well, at least one of them.

I agree with Versa, I think that they probably find allot of common man remains, but there aren't any interesting grave goods to find. Maybe the grave goods of the common person were made of wood and in time decomposed. Or perhaps made of some other perishible material.

They have inferred flowers in some Neanderthal burials because they found pollen from flowers in the graves.
