A UN camp in Burundi was attacked last night and at least 160 refugees were brutally shot, hacked, and burnt to death. The Burundi government is blaming elements of neighboring Congo for the attack. Civilians, women and children were among the massacred. Victims were shot, some were attacked with machetes and some were burned to death in this inhumane act.

Nearly 160 people were shot, hacked and burnt to death at a Tutsi refugee camp in Burundi in an overnight attack the country's president blamed on elements from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

At least 159 people were killed and 110 injured in an attack last night on the Gatumba refugee camp, which lies just inside the border with the DRC, near the capital Bujumbura, the military said.

"We have counted 159 dead," spokesman Major Adolphe Manirakiza said. "What has happened is abominable," he said.

What is the UN good for if they gather up refugees into a camp to provide for them yet make it this easy for the gathered to be brutally killed as has happened here and other instances where UN camps become targets of aggression and brutality. The same thing has happened in the Sudan. While providing a shelter and food are good, these refugees must also be protected and the UN needs to step up their protection to these innocents.

The UN is a peacefull organisation, they can not see everything coming and they can not have armies ready for every refugee camp everywhere.
This is very sad and unacceptable though, and hopefully UN will spend more resources in trying to gather intel on about-to-happen attacks like this.

I always thought the UN was useless. If they do nothing about this than they suck.

Heh, the UN useless?
You truly know nothing at all about it do you?
The UN has done so many good things in this world, but people just forget or don't even bother to find out about it, they rather focuss on mistakes it seems.

Judging from the Burundi president's comments it sound like war in between Burundi and Congo may be imminent.

Death toll now reported at 180 in this attack on the UN refugee camp....

Officials: At least 180 Congolese refugees massacred in Burundian refugee camp
BUJUMBURA, Burundi (AP) Dozens of attackers raided a U.N. refugee camp in western Burundi, shooting and hacking to death at least 180 people, witnesses and local officials said Saturday.

A Burundian Hutu rebel faction claimed responsibility for the attack late Friday near the Congolese border, saying its fighters were in pursuit of Burundian soldiers who fled to the camp from a nearby army position.

The assailants screamed war cries as they rushed into the camp and set it ablaze, local official Louis Niyonzima told The Associated Press.

Was it guarded by U.N. troops? If it was just a safe haven operated by the U.N. then there wasn't any way to stop the attack. If there were U.N. troops there then someone needs a slap and a kick. Too much beaurocracy is likely the cause for inaction. when the Islraelis shelled a U.N. hospital a few years back, nothing came of it just a "bit of naughty-naughty, stop that."

The UN has done good things and they have also done nothing when they should have intervened.

Claiming responsibility for the attack, Hutu forces claimed they intended to attack a nearby military encampment. However the Birundi army says the purpose of the attack was to kill refugees.

Hutu rebels and allied attackers armed with guns and machetes have killed at least 159 people in "a plan of genocide" at a camp for Tutsi Congolese refugees in western Burundi, the army has said.

Women screamed and wailed at the horrific scenes of bodies of men, women and children hacked down or shot dead. A witness saw one woman lying dead with machete wounds all over her body as her infant child clung at her breast.

Rwanda is accusing another group, responsible for the 1994 genocide of Tutsis, of carrying out the attack. Witnesses say the attackers chanted "Hallelujah! Hallelujah", as they beat drums and hurled grenades.

Too bad the Tutsis cannot get a break. However it seems that the Hutus are reacting to a previous action by the Tutsis. Payback is a ... Well you know.

Another version of this story, Burundian Hutus claim responsibility, the remaining refugess were moved to a school where they will now be protected by the army, too little too late for the vicitms of this massacre.

180 Dead in Refugee Camp Massacre
GATUMBA, Burundi (AP) -- Attackers with machetes and automatic weapons raided a U.N. refugee camp in western Burundi, shooting and hacking to death at least 180 men, women and children, U.N.
officials said.

Burundian Hutu rebels claimed responsibility, insisting the camp for Congolese Tutsi refugees fleeing tribal fighting was a hide-out for Burundi army soldiers and Congolese tribal militiamen.

But most of the victims appeared to be women and children. On Saturday, their charred remains lay among the cooking utensils and the smoldering remnants of their former homes.

in a way it reminds me of Intelligance agencys. no one thanks them for when they do something, but when they miss something everyone calls them useless and a waste of time.

I doubt there were UN troops their though. dosnt say anything about x amount of rebel kills or x amount of UN soldiers killed.

Burundi has closed it's borders to the Congo, whie Burundian Hutus claimed responsibility for the attacks, the Burundi gov't appears to still believe that Congon rebels may have carried out the attacks..

Burundi prepares for attack
Burundi has closed its border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), claiming that the massacre of nearly 160 Congolese Tutsis at a refugee camp was carried out by invaders from the neighbouring country.

It also tightened security around the airport at the capital, Bujumbura, the capital, amid fears that Hutu extremists in the DRC and their Mai-Mai allies were planning an attack, a senior official told AFP, requesting anonymity.
