Hackers can hide their traces by using another computer. I know a guy who told me his friend got arrested for child porn even though he never did anything. Apparently his computer server was insecure and they redirected through his server.

It's one of those situations where the law hasn't caught up with technology. Nothing you can do. The evidence says the son did it. And there's nothing to say he didn't. He probably just had an insecure connection.

I believe that's where Botnets come in. Hackers will infect computers on a mass scale. Mostly up to a few hundred computers and these computers will be connected to a server. The hacker will then issue a command to the server that then issues the command to these computers making them attack this IP or server.

Resulting in innocent victims having their bandwidth used to attack a target. This will then lead to the FBI tracing the IP to an innocent victim with an infected computer.

There is not much you can do after that, it's extremely hard to trace a hacker who knows what they are doing. Hackers tend to use special modified browsers which can mask their IP.

I personally believe this child at the age of 13 was a victim to this. Time will tell though with investigation.

Also just to show you how absurd it is...

www.youtube.com...

Go to that youtube page and watch the video. If you agree with tossing people in jail for doing that then you have serious problems.

If the kid did some actual hacking, stole files, deleted files, etc.. then I might see things a bit differently. But, as you can see in the video, he used a program because he wanted to be cool and feel like part of a group. Kids these days spend more time on-line then we ever did as children and they forge friendships online just as much if not more then in their every day life. This was a kid wanting to be accepted by his peers and by downloading a program and clicking a button, he was able to become part of their group.

Think of this.. If you were to go to your web browser and open google.com up in a few hundred browers you would have done the exact same thing this kid did. Sure LOIC does it a bit faster and easier, but on the network level all you are doing is connecting to the website a bunch of times. No hacking, no stealing, just a bunch of UDP packets to port 80. Annoying? sure. Worth going to jail over? I highly think not.

Picking up a gun and pulling the trigger is easy too. He had the intent on breaking the law, he broke the law fully understanding the consequences yet he continued to break the law. He is now reaping what he has sown. His greatest crime however was hacking from his house on his personal hardware.

"Cops" do not invade you house for something like this, I would think it is a wee bit more serious?
From the main OP, thre seems to be a few missing pieces.

If this incident is real, and if the kid was in some way involved in the cyber attack on paypal, whether in the planning stages, actually doing it, or simply lending his IP address, he aided in a crime. Sorry but aiding in a crime is a crime.

I don't see how this makes you sick.

The cops traditionally do go after the smaller people to get to the ones who are higher up because the smaller ones will almost always squeal.

I'm starting to get tired of all these cyber attacks and people thinking Anonymous is some white knight. They are the rotten apple that is spoiling the bunch.

So following your logic if sometime I decide to hack you, root your computer than use it to DDOS a couple national defense machines your as guilty as I am? Cool... good to know

Nothing gonna stop us

sg.news.yahoo.com...

"Your threats to arrest us are meaningless to us as you cannot arrest an idea... there is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- you can possibly do to make us stop."

"We are not scared anymore,"

"Yes, we haz (sic) more of your delicious data," the Twitter post read. "You call it war; we laugh at your battleships."

To all peoples who lash at us, we only find you amusing

And to say, people on ATS who are enjoying watching some of us getting arrested, dont worry, for one arrested, 10 are joining us.

"And we will continue to fight them, with all methods we have at our disposal, and that certainly includes breaking into their websites and exposing their lies."

Remember

We fight the good fight

There was every chance this lads PC was hacked and his IP used.
Very easy thing to do. Here in the UJ for about £80 you can buy hacked modems, 20mb, 30mb etc.
The way it works is you are sharing an IP Adress with someone who isnt aware.
I dont have one of these modems, but I have heard about them. Similar to the old cheat virgin media (same company with the modems) boxes. £100 got you all programming, premium stuff included.

Maybe this lad has no idea. Surely the police wil find that out. if what I am saying is true.
Even if isnt a 13 year old getting told to do this by an adult is a bit like a peado telling a 13 year old to take of her top. What is the difference?

I will get flamed to death, but just my thoughts.

Well that settles that. I mean in the end the source was reddit after all.

Doesn't seem likely that this is real. Nobody is reporting it either. Hmmmm

So how does disrupting PSN and stealing people's credit card information make you fighting the good fight? Makes you look like a thief to me. All you will wind up accomplishing is tightening down on the freedom we enjoy on the internet and more than likely getting yourselves labeled a terrorist organization. And when they do the latter you'll see the government act very very differently because right now they have their hands tied.

Before finding this kid "guilty" please keep in mind a few things.

The Internet is full of scripts which do nothing but hunt for Windows computers which are not patched against the hundreds of vulnerabilities the OS has, usually a newly installed copy of Windows will be compromised in less than 5 minutes once connected to the Internet. These scripts can come from spammer bots. botnet zombies, kids playing around, gangs of hackers from China, Russia, Nigeria, Indonesia - you name it.

The government, especially law enforcement is not current with technology nor the security threats which exist. When a hacking event takes place, they trace the IP responsible and issue subpenas. They can, will and HAVE prosecuted innocent people who were guilty only of having a vulnerable computer which was taken over by someone else.

No true hacker or even minimally experienced script kiddy is going to use their own connection to perform illegal activities. There are thousands of free, easily found proxies as well as paid for VPN services who will hide your identity from anyone who comes asking, including the government. They use RAM based logging which eliminates all traces needed to find the perps every 30 seconds or so. Hackers who know what they are doing will chain together as many proxies, VPNs and compromised computers they need in order to completely hide who they are and where they came from.

You can support these hacking groups, if you want to or even just agree with them exposing certain things but please keep in mind that in order to do what they do, quite a few innocent parties are being put in the middle and when the FBI comes to take your computer or raids your data center and takes your server(s) there are individuals and businesses being hurt, losing money and even being forced to defend themselves against wrongful prosecution.

I had a good friend who had a computer compromised which was used to hack a city government facility. He spent close to two years in jail fighting against a system which did not understand even the first thing about the process. He was jailed with no bond and by the time he finally got to trial his cheapest and quickest way out was to plead guilty and take time served (since he'd already spent two years locked up). He was also deported permanently as a bonus.

If you don't secure your computer or know how to keep it that way, this is the best time to learn. Don't become part of the rush to prosecute these groups, they're going to step on a lot of toes along the way. As for Anon and Lulsec - they will be caught sooner or later. They have the attention of govt teams who have tools they can't even imagine. No matter how "good" they are, they will not be able to hide from these people and the resources they are using.

I am suprised at all the negative Anon comments in this thread. What about Anon has harmed you so much? Establishing communications in Tunisia, Egypy, Libya when the oppressive governments tried to shut it down? Hacking and exposing HBGary, who were developing software for the US Government to spy. on it's own citizens?

We did not steal the PSN account info, you have only Sony's contempt for your privacy to thank for that, How has Anon had such a negative impact on you to deserve all this negativity? Too many Walter Mitty Armchair Commandos spouting off. What have any of you Anon detractors done personally to resist tyranny? Do or do not. It seems that whining acceptance, and support of the very governments you posture against is more welcomed here than any type of action. Above Indifference more like. Shame on you.
