Just days after the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden, the U.S. came within inches of taking out the next big target on their terror hit list, the man considered the biggest threat to America.


ABC News has learned that on May 5, the U.S. military dispatched a fearsome array of heavily armed warplanes including Marine Harrier jets, predator drones and a special operations aircraft carrying short range Griffin missiles to follow a pickup truck in which Awlaki was a passenger.


Apparently, something went wrong with the tageting laser on the AC-130 (I think), and the first missile missed. Awlaki then called in more "trucks" and was able to switch vehicles. The harriers and predators fired more missiles, hitting the truck once, but the truck kept on driving.Eventually, another missile was fired and finally destroyed the original truck, but missed Alwaki.

They got a little cartoon of how the failed strike went down.



Plus, the merging of Alwaki and Zawhahiri mission is to "hit US forces abroad" instead of targeting places inside the US.
