What i would like to know (as a non-smoker) .........

How can you all afford to smoke?

What do you all go without...because you smoke?

How much a month do you spend on cigarettes?

We are a secret society and we have secret smoking codes, we have meetings in shady basements behind innocent-looking bookstores. We have secret switches placed along restaurant kitchen back-door's thresholds.

Be patient, all secrets will be revealed.

When I was smoking, I was able to afford it because we never really ate out at restaurants. Eating there is expensive. Cigarettes out here in MN are 5.50 a pack. I was smoking a pack a day. That comes out as $170.50 in 31 days. Over a year it is $2007.50. I have been smoking since I was 14 so that is 17 years. I had been smoking a pack a day since i was 18 so for 13 years. The price of smokes has changed through the years so this next calculation is not entierly accurate but in my lifetime I have spent close to $25,000.00 on cigarettes.

There's no point living a long miserable life, you mayas well just cut it down by a few years and start smoking again

woodwardjnr,

You know what, you could be right saying that. That small sentence sums it up in one go..........

I have sat and thought to myself, Mmmm....I never went to bed early, but now I do. I used to sit up until all hours because I love the night time, writing books, writing comedy, preparing stand up routines, playing music, painting on large canvas. reading, drawing and going out and socialising, drinking with friends. I used to do all this while smoking a few cigarettes. But the last 3 months this has all come to a stand still and now I am bored and cannot concentrate on anything, my life I feel has gone from good to bad. I suppose when I decided to quit the cigarettes I was expecting a rough ride from the off, but not to this extent.

I am moving back to the UK from Australia at the end of the month after 4 years away. Now I am moving back to the UK because I have become bored of my life in Oz, I had had enough of being here after the first 18 months. Oz is a beautiful country, but living here is very different to just being here on holiday, there is just not enough vibrancy and Umph. The social element is so different here, so culturally very different to the UK, and I suppose if a place doesn't feel like home after 4 years, then there is no point trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Everything here seems to be in slow motion, unreal, a bit like heavens waiting room. I feel as though I am in a daily photograph in 2011 and I am the only person moving around, everyone around me is just standing still in 1950, so very weird. So to do all this on a daily basis and not have a cigarette is way too unbearable.....

I suppose I wanted to return home feeling more healthy, which I don't. I wanted to return home and start anew, begin a new chapter in my life, without smoking, but somehow I don't think all this is gonna happen. So you know what? I think when I get to Sydney airport next week the cash register is gonna make a sale in the Duty Free department.

So here's to a pint of beer in one hand, a smoke in the other and sitting with old mates in a real pub next week...

CHEEEEERS................

kudos to the OP. w0rd. add the 6th, a nifty smoke and a cupa coffee is way healthier than the mutant fruits and veggies plus the chemical crap the food industries are pushing down our throats.

Sorry to bring you this bad news but you can't smoke in pubs any more in the UK. They've been taken over by big brother. You have to lose your seat (if it's a busy pub) and go outside for a smoke, then come back in and fight to get your chair back, or stand.

Some are even considering banning smoking in the home, in high streets, and in parks.

I'm a smoker, sometimes heavily, and I often wonder if It's protecting me from some illnesses. I think any bacteria or virus dies off the minute it hits my blood stream becuase I never seem to catch what everyone else has got.

Right now I'm trying the smoking outside thing and I've cut my rations down to a quarter, which is good. But if I go without a cigarette for a few hours I get a weird sensation in my forehead, like it's frozen or cut off from the rest of my head,
It's hard to explain but it's there, only when I haven't had a cigarette in a while.

This is what shocked me into cutting down.

Prepare yourselves.

That is an extreme close-up of cigarette paper.

5 iffy health benefits do not outweigh the fact that cigarette smoke contains over 4000 chemicals, 69 that are known to cause cancer, plus 599 added by the tobacco industry. The smoke, combustibles, carcinogens tar carbon monoxide ammonia even embalming fluid ( just to name a few) found in cigarettes will cause illness and death in the long run.

You KNOW this. Anyone who uses this silly study for a justification to keep smoking is lying to themselves and they know it.

I have room to talk. I'm an ex smoker of 22 years myself. I quit by using an e-cig. I don't care what people use as long as they are not inhaling smoke. You can be addicted to the gum or patches it that's what it takes to save your life I don't care but please don't inhale that smoke.

It is clear that the disadvantages of smoking far outweigh any perceived advantages. While there is a cost associated with quitting, over time the damage smoking had done to the body can reverse itself if a person ceases tobacco use. This puts that cost into perspective, especially when compared to the thousands of dollars spent every year on smoking. With all the disadvantages to continued smoking and no real advantages to it, isn’t it time you saved your health and your money by putting in the effort to become tobacco-free?

What a great article written by you. It is really appreciable. I think Peoples are just saying wrong. A friend of mine always says that doctor said a single cigarettes less 8 minutes of your life and if you laugh one time, It cause 10 minutes increase your life so laughing and smoking all the time. its net profit of 2 minutes....
