Ten years ago Monday, scenes out of Baltimore gripped the nation and much of the world when a CSX freight train carrying hazardous cargo derailed and caught fire in the century-old tunnel that winds below downtown.

For a week much downtown activity stopped. Three Orioles games at nearby Camden Yards were canceled. Freight rail traffic along the East Coast was paralyzed. Temperatures in the tunnel rose as high as 1,500 degrees as a witches' brew of chemicals burned alongside paper and pulp products, and smoke poured from the openings.

The reason I put this in the war on terrorism thread is that it shows how the emphasis on safety is put in the wrong places against terrorism or any form of.
So much is spent on TSA screeners and decisions can be made to ban bottles of shampoo, but an example of a single train carrying hazmats disabling the city for a week, doesn't get any attention.

Trains are still a major carrier of goods, food, and beef across the country. Also moving a lot of coal and other fuel sources. To be able to simply cripple the train system can cripple the whole system. and it seems the rail system is largely going ignored.

How many other cities have dangerous cargo being hauled through them?
