Put the information on a IronKey flash drive.
store.ironkey.com...
Put a truecrypt partition on the drive with another password.
put the password in upside down text. pɹoʍssɐd then tell them what the password is.

And put another truecrypt partition inside the first truecrypt partition with its own password with nothing but a page from a book translated to some other language and a popup that goes "warning camera not showing the proper owner" and a count down from 20 to 0 and then a blue screen.
www.truecrypt.org...

Then see if the government find it all to even ask for all the passwords

you mean to tell me that the department of justice cannot decrypt a lil 'ol passphrase?

it would be cool if someboady invented something that would automatically deguass a disk upon incorrect password authentication (or upon correct decoy authentication)

"what?! you mean youve managed to currupt it? did you put the capitol P like i told ya?"

I have actually read about something similar, definitely wouldn't be impossible.

You people saying she HAS to give up the key absolutely crack me up.

No... she doesn't HAVE to give them the key. She claims the 5th to avoid self incrimination. Period. If they want to get into that drive they better learn some hacking skills. This whole notion that because of "terrorism" (which is a load of BS) someone would have to incriminate themselves is ridiculous.

Let me give you an example. You just shot someone. They are dead. The police think you shot someone but they need the murder weapon. Your gonna tell me that because of what "terrorism" has done, your compelled to hand over the murder weapon? Oh well... better do your patriotic duty and not go against the gubment here right?

Come on..... It's this "better do as your told" attitude that is exactly why the government keeps perpetrating this "ooga booga terrorism" bullcrap in the first place.

I don`t think this is much different then having to take a piss test on the self incriminating factor. So we have already lost that right and I'm sure there are more then a few of you that agree that right wasn`t mine. Just find it funny how the big money people end up overdosing all the time yet are employed.

So as the 5th amendment is rubbish it only sounds good in writing not in the justice aspect though.
Rights are for the wealthy only the ones that have attorney fees to fight the corrupt government.

If we had this right this thread wouldn`t be here right now because it wouldn`t be an issue.

Not sure if you've heard about this or not, but technically you lose your rights when committing an illegal act.

Not your human rights as stated in the Geneva convention, but any rights you have/had towards protecting you from being punished from a crime you committed you lose.

Turn it around, every paedophile gen's up on Computer Security and manages to evade prosecution by refusing to provide the key and thus still is able to distribute images of child pornography ?

Would that be fair ?

the real question here is why do they need us to give them the passphrase when they are perfectly capable of decrypting it themselves [nsa].

answer: because its not about getting getting the material. its about getting your rights.

I'd actually agree to a point, I'm fairly certain there isn't any software on the Internet or available for civilian purchase that the Gov can't crack.

However, from a business perspective, putting in requests to other agencies costs money, time and computing power (which again costs money) when I'm sure the three letter agencies have better things to do doing with their mainframes.

But, thinking about the number of occasions (very small I'd guess) the regular cops run into encryption they can't break and require the suspect to hand over the key, I'd hazard a guess and say it would be feasible from a business point of view to hand these cases to the code crackers.

I'm not sure, rather than dwelling on the "rights" aspect. The law is the law, it's an offence to withhold your encryption keys and if you don't supply them you can be charged, if you really don't want to find yourself in that situation then either a.) don't do anything illegal, b.) don't store your information or anything that could be connected to your behaviour on a computer or c.) don't get caught.

There isn't really any more to the subject than that, and ultimately if your innocent wouldn't you just simply hand the key over?

Really? Could you show me where it says you lose your rights when committing a crime? Cause I and many others would love to see that. But I'll beat you to the punch there... you don't. In fact the only right you seem to lose in this country by committing a crime is your right to posses a firearm. And that is if you have been convicted of domestic abuse. So please.. if you can find me a written rule that shows this person, no matter how much she may be wrong, must give up her password... I will gladly admit I am wrong and move on.

NO, NO, NO

No, You do not lose your Civil Rights when you have committed a crime.

No, There is No offence so horrible that would supersede someone’s Civil Rights.

No, I would not change my opinion nor my Principles if it was me who was the victim.

Our principles and commitment to Civil Rights is more important than any one of us. Civil Rights is what Men lay down their lives for.

Everyone of your arguments are Short-Sighted and short term.

Ha HA ha ha ha! You made me spit my coffee on my monitor.

No one has given their life for Civil Rights in America for quite some time.

Nobody has Civil Rights anymore. Congress gave the President authority to kill Americans without a trial.

I know there is programs that if you get the password 3 times in a row the file is deleted. I have seen that type used in person. I have heard that there are programs that if you get the password wrong 3 times in a row it will format the hard drive.

Your assuming terrorists have the same rights as us.

How exactly do the authorities know who is a terrorist and who isn't?

Easy..
They don't care..
If you disagree with their ways, (and/or especially speak against them) you're a "terrorist!"
'Patriot acts' pretty much sum that up.

baloney,
no one is under any obligation to incriminate themselves
what part of 5th amendment are you choosing to ignore?

get a clue, there are no terrorists: just gov and spook operatives

once upon a time, i got a ticket from a cop who caught me disposing some old cash registers

he forgot to put the date on, which invalidated it.

i was told i had to go to city hall to get the ticket fixed.

i went there and requested the fine [$1,000] be rescinded as the ticket was invalidated.

" i'm afraid you can't do that. now if you'll give me the ticket i'll have a new one made..."

"HA! in other words you need my help in order to rip me off for a 1000 bucks. you'll get no help from me lady."

tore the ticket up in front of her, put the pieces in my pocket, and went for a lovely walk in old san juan never heard from the police or city hall concerning that fine again.

only a very stupid person goes about helping others screw them over.

stop confusing laws/legalities with rationality.

and pray you are never water-boarded or beaten with a rubber hose in order to help the authorities put you in jail.

And still no one has commented or replied on my hypothetical paedophile scenario, please rights hugger's explain how it would be fair to for a person with stored child pornography on a laptop refuse to give his encryption key to the police?

Your all the same, banging on about the constitution etc but you never look at it in the sense that your "rights" could be protecting someone who is actually in fact 100% guilty, please explain how that's right ?

Since you had to use the old "what if it was a pedophile" card (yup it's been used lots of times on ATS among other places) and nobody else has responded then allow me:
There should be and is no grant of authority to our public officials which can nullify our civil rights. If we can't maintain the principals which are the foundation of what we consider freedom in our society- in our legal system, then we aren't a free society anymore, we are a police state. There is no such thing as perfection, and our legal system is a good example of this. Take a look at what happens when you give authority the chance to infringe upon civil rights. It happens slowly, bit by bit. First it's the pedophiles. Next the sexual deviants (open to interpretation)... and so on. It's known as the slippery slope phenomenon. Once you slide down that slope, it's hard to get back up. This is exactly what happened in Nazi Germany, bit by bit, too slow for anyone to notice. It has been going on for a long time in the USA, more so since the patriot act. Those are some greasy hills above us, happy climbing everyone.
