Top End stirred but not shaken by quake

An earthquake about 700 kilometres north of Australia has rattled the Top End but there have been no reports of damage or injury.

Just after 6.30 this morning Northern Territory time, parts of Darwin and as far away as Katherine felt small tremors from the magnitude six earthquake.

The earthquake was centred in the Banda Sea between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

"This is where the Australian plate is moving towards the Eurasian plate.

"So there is a lot of interaction there, there is a lot of energy between the two plates and we get this release of energy, what we call an earthquake."
