This week, a group of geologists report that they've found a lost continent off the coast of Scotland. 55 million years ago, about 10 million years after dinosaurs died out, a chunk of the seafloor erupted from beneath the water. It created a small continent that existed for at least a million years, covered in dramatic mountains and valleys, and irrigated with streaming rivers. Eventually the landscape sank back beneath the waves, its once-sunny mountains buried beneath 2 kilometers of seabed.

First of all this news alone was fascinating to me. I was hoping to get some information from more knowledgeable on how it's taken us so long to discover this and if there is a chance there may be more 'continents' like this out there.

The second part I found fascinating was HOW this occurred. Essentially a giant explosion erupts inside the Earth, pushing up the seafloor and creating a new area of land. See the picture attached below for a little image of this.

When this occurred, it was during the last time our Earth was experiencing a warmer climate which may spark a few fears with some members and scoffs from others. Either way it's amazing just how volatile and scary this planet can be, and left me sort of awed/worried. Anyone here aware of the chances of his happening again in the near future and any idea how often it's happened in the past? I will do more digging but hoping someone with some base knowledge will come help me out!

Hawaii is not classed as a CONTINENT though. Continents are the big ones if memory serves. Now you've got me wondering how long Hawaii has been there. Ugh now I have to go look. Not enough time in the day!

I see you're a stones throw away from me, I'm on the Eastside. Does news like this freak you out too? For some reason I have horrifying thoughts of some catastrophic earthquake striking and knocking this beautiful state of ours into the ocean.

Yes indeed it does, our surrounding states or anything around the whole Olympic Peninsula haven't seen anything devastating in a while now,. I have a gut feeling something is on the come up soon, but hey what are we gonna do except sit back and watch the fireworks hahah. We will all be doomed at some point in life.

Well thank you. I'm interested in members thoughts. Does this kind of news bother/scare you? I personally felt humbled by our planet. We always think we humans are in control...

Off course it is a little worrying, but if we are going to be hit, we are going to be hit, nothing we can do about it,apart from running to the hills .

Mind you I did read about the mini tsunami, in Cornwall, and also the report, that southern UK is sinking while the north is rising, which I find interesting.

People in the UK are being blinded by the Government and the UK Mainstream Media. With all this phone hacking etc., while there are things happening around the world which is not being reported. But which is being reported by other non mainstream news channel, such as ATS and users on you tube, etc.

Still I find it interesting, about this lost land off the coasts of Scotland. Just shows how these islands have ben shaped over the decades.
