Just 58.2% of American Adults Are Employed!( and going downward)

Last week's dramatic unemployment report is more startling with a second look. Even though the unemployment rate is technically 9.2%, the employment-population ratio fell to 58.2%. Translation: at the moment, only 58.2% of American adults are employed,

Pior to the recent recession, the ratio was above 63%. Normally, the employment-population ratio moves in opposition to the unemployment rate, but not this year. In December, the unemployment rate began falling – but without a corresponding increase in the employment-population ratio.

Man, this is just crazy. Seriously. Someone needs to have a Private Talk with Mr. Obama. I don't care who but they have to convince him he is just on the wrong side of things and that it would be best if he just resigned and let us get to saving the country from total wipe-out.

We CAN NOT continue at these rates of decline. The straw is getting heavy on the camels back...

I love how Mr. Obama is trying to look like he is the innocent party in this mess the USA is in. Being all mad because the Republicans won't let him spend anymore money. Thank God. Obama could care less it you work because he is a socialist. He wants the ones who want to work to pay the way for others. They probably cheer in the White House over this report.

The hope is that they can get people to work for mere change.... and massive unemployment helps that. When there are few jobs, more people will work for peon's wages.

There's always signing up to be fodder in any one of the current conflicts or the coming conflicts.

Won the long before the only viable options for earning a living are crime and war.

Of course if the gov would let go of some of the land it's hanging onto and stop taxing people just for living folks could farm and be self-sustaining.

You are correct that these numbers are bad news. Very bad news. But we also need to be honest about how all of this came about. The stimulus spending package was introduced under our prior president. Whether you think that was a good or bad decision, it wasn't Obama's. The deregulation and ponzi like Wall Street approach were also in place before Obama.

That said, he doesn't seem to be doing a whole lot to help.
It seems to me that corporations got us into this (including lobbying the government to pin the cost on the taxpayer) and they are going to have to be the ones to get us out. But I don't think they really care. And they are all cross exposed to each other so that the Euor zone instability is problematic as well.

It's a mess.
We need some kind of change for the better and soon.

Everybody wanted change! Everybody was all smiles and cheering and chanting for change.

Well.....He gave you change.

Nobody bothered to ask him what kind of change so he gave us whatever they wanted to give us.

We let this happen and will continue.


I wish the laws of free will were cast aside for a moment to allow another race to beings to help us get rid of these people who obviously don't care about anybody but themselves and their own interests.

The $64,000 dollar question: Where have all of the jobs gone?

Makes me glad I have the job and benefits I do have, but at the same time, I am profoundly sad of the direction things seem to be heading these days. We need to take care of things here soon. This corruption and manipulation and forced separation of our country is getting more and more than I can find the ability to stomach.
Driving that wedge deeper and deeper between the "Haves" and "Have-Nots"....
My question to the Haves.....if you trod down on all the Have-Nots.....who's shoulders do you expect to climb on to be carried through and above all the filth you have so graciously and greedily created....don't expect it to be on our shoulders....

And yes I do realize the "job security" I do have, at the moment, can all be yanked away at a whim......or for a better grasp for the corporate machine to grab up even more fiat money in areas of cheaper labor and cost at the expense of those who have helped them obtain the high perch on their ivory tower.
I am just hoping someday soon to be able to see the look in their eyes when that tower is to start coming undone, brick by brick, at the very bottom of it's base. As the mortar that holds it together breaks away.

From the look of the employment/unemployment rate.....unless they tax the rich that seem to be tax sheltered.....there doesn't seem to be enough of "us" to tax to pick up the burden. I don't know about you all, but my shoulders are getting kind of sore.

A lot of those jobs didnt really exist in the first place.

They were artificial bubble jobs funded by artificial bubble credit backed by artificial bubble spending/buying.

For everyone who lost one they were as real as real gets. For reality however they weren't real jobs based on a real economy.

Nothing short of revolution will change anything for the better. The multinational global corporations own pretty much everything, including the governments, all bought and payed for.

In their eyes, all citizens are actually employees, and they are the management, and the country is corporate land that is only leased to the employee.

A new way is needed, a paradigm that does not have greed at its very core like capitalism. A paradigm that has cooperation and community as its roots, not domination and materialism.

Unfortunately, humanity is so primitive both emotionally and spiritually, that shifting from a self-centered materialism based reality to something more harmonious and productive on its own seems highly unlikely in this age, or even the next. Humanities self destruction seems more likely.

As I look at the two pictures of the people standing in unemployment lines from now and the Depression era I noticed the age difference/appearence.

It seems like the one from today are much younger compared to the older looking people in the older shot.

I would guess that back then the younger men could work the harder task back then? Maybe the color/b&W shots?

Seems like there are plenty of Obama bashers in this thread, so let me ask you "republicans" this. The republicans ran on jobs in the campaigns for the 2010 elections. How many jobs bills have they brought to the floor? How about democrats? The right wing controls the house and senate, and now the blue dog, Obama seems to be moving further to the right of center than he already was.

Seems like the right is trying to kill the economy for nothing except so they can win more power back. They drove us to depression last time, so what do any of you expect the next time they have power? Make no mistake, this has been a depression.

We can't raise taxes on the job creators is what we are bombarded with daily from Boehner, Cantor etc. Yet the alleged "liberal" media has never asked where the jobs are since those job creators have had those tax cuts for 10 years now. Where are the jobs, republicans? How about the media do it's job?

By the way............save it, I support Ron Paul.

Go back to school the major problem here is expenditures. Meaning that we spend more money than we take in

There are two types of costs, Variable and Fixed

The Republicans seem to be trying to shift government to be low fixed costs and high variable costs thus making it more adaptable to future revenue issues
meanwhile Obama is asking for increased spending at every engagement and raising fixed costs to absurd ratios.

I don't know why it continues to startle me, I just know it does, that so many people in the U.S. think of themselves as employees.

Surely all the entrepreneurs and sole proprietorships are not counted among the "unemployed" are they? Surely all the enterprising beings who have no interest at all in being a statutorily defined "employee" - or any other statutorily defined entity for that matter - are not counted among the unemployed, are they?

Workers of the world unite? Workers of the world get a clue!

No one owes other people a job. If there are not enough jobs out there to satisfy the economic needs of everyone, then perhaps it is time to get enterprising about the situation and change the circumstances.

Do "employees" today imagine that hunters of lore just sat around and complained there wasn't enough prey to easily kill, and the tribal elders would convene and legislate it so that there was more and easier prey to kill?

The Pilgrims did not set sail on the Mayflower because they heard there were really great jobs in the New World. The expansion out west did not happen because people heard there were really great jobs out west, and no one ever created any wealth demanding they be given a job.

The Republicans do not "have" the Senate. It is controlled by the Democrats as is the entire executive branch. The Republicans can only pass bills where the Democrats kill them in the Senate. Even if they got throught he Senate, the president will veto everything that has the slightest chance of making Republicans look like they have a good idea. All politics regardless how many regular citizens must suffer.

Obama headed right and toward the center? I saw that fake move last season by Reggie Bush.

Incorrect. The republicans effectively control the senate, as they can stop any and all bills in their tracks. You may want to bone up on your politics before you venture into the deep end.

all Obama has to to is end the federal prohibition on the cannabis plant.

firstly this would allow the united states to grow our own hemp, produce our own biofuel and end our addiction to foreign oil and help the ecosystem - all the while creating jobs in those markets and the many others that would be involved.

secondly it would end the crimes being founded by criminals who have a source of income from the black market that is selling a plant. the cultivation of cannabis for recreational use, medicinal and research would open up more doors for employment.

thirdly it would allow the unrestricted access of unlimited people to begin adequately studying the anticancerous effects, among other beneficial health effects, that cannabis oil produces when consumed by humans.

and that is a far simplified list of points that would help to produce jobs and further the wellbeing of this dying nation.
