I'm just watching my Twitter feed from Reuters and the BBC - They have just tweeted a 'flash' that Obama is warning there will be no social security checks on Aug 3rd if a resolution to the debt crisis cannot be found. Sorry no news links yet as it's breaking news. However, this may be a shot across the bows of the Republicans in advance of talks - but if not and it's serious - then it has the potential to cause not just distress but chaos in the USA.

For the record....a friend and neighbor of mine is a senior citizen....and she just got off of the phone with Social Security and the above statement ....(IS NOT TRUE)....social security payments will continue as as scheduled.

Doesnt matter if you think the statement is true or not,he came out and said it..........
Dont count on the SS administration to know JACK.......most of those agencies dont know anything until it hits them, they are so unprepared.......

The statement is true, whether it happens or not is to be seen........

This news does not surprise me.

I wish we could ALL (not just in the Us) not go to work or anywhere for a whole day. An entire day of "THE PEOPLE" showing we can make or break them. Its not the other way around. WE have power but are not using it....

I don't know if the above scenario would do anything but its a way for us to shut them down and make them know who really is in charge??? I am open for suggestions....

I am not for the Fed, never have been and know that this was a major mistake and we are reaping what was sowed.

well, it may be they haven't gotten the memo yet.
I mean the ink is still wet on the twitter feed.

What will really enrage people is knowing that this does not have to happen! And it is true, they do not have to halt SS checks this is purely a political move to destroy the Republicans if they do not cave into Obama’s demands.

Pat Toomey has already offered up a bill which would guarantee everything stays safe in the event of debt ceiling not being raised. I guess Obama and the Democrats are ignoring that legislation so as to play politics with the seniors! My grandparents would be homeless and starving without SS, do not play politics with innocent lives you bastard!

What and people think Food Stamps and disability checks will be sent out and not SS? Quick joking yourself, I would not be surprised if even Medicare/Medicaid was halted.

When in doubt scare the "seasoned citizens". Classy move on the Obama administration's part. I can just see the congressional switchboards lit up with calls from angry geezers.

I see the 'problem/reaction/solution' paradigm playing out. If the debt ceiling and taxes are not raised, then the checks won't go out. They're playing cat n' mouse waiting for the public outcry to raise the debt ceiling, so they can have their monthy check. That way the bankers get paid, the debt ceiling and taxes get raised, austerity programs remain intact, and so forth. It's a win/win for them and lose/lose for us.

But they CAN pay the military?

Oh yeah that probably was within the old budget.

Does anyone have numbers of the percentage of people having social security AND one or more firearms?

Let's see what happens August the second.

Pure unadulterated crap. There is enough money in the Federal government to cover those "necessities" - like SS, MediCare, etc....because they waste more than all of those put together every month.

If the average family operated its budget like the Federal government...every household in American would be broke.

"Let's get the country in MY camp by creating fear and divisiveness." In pollitics it's always "the other guy's" fault. Let's not forget that we could've had a balanced budget back when the Dems controlled everything...but no, they want us to go from crisis to crisis...

Does this mean social security is going to stay alive and kicking?
I thought everyone wants social security to be eliminated, except the socialists of course.

I take it that you are someone who's mother or father doesn't depend on social security to live?

Not everyone thinks Social Security is Socialist, I am a Conservative and do not believe that one bit.

I don't know about you folks but I am getting tired of this Administration
crying Wolf at every event.

MAYBE if they (the Dems) were doing their dam jobs not all these things would be going down to the wire.

Trust me. The people on SS will be paid. No doubt about it.

Shhhhh, saying this quietly. . . . .
If Obama wants to get re-elected he'll stop paying congressional salaries and perks instead.
(shhhhh)

ETA; I thought Gore said it (social security) was in a "lock-box".

Wow, he sounds like my boss at work

"If you don't all do what I want, then I'll make you all do this even worse job!"

I'm glad we don't have Obama as our leader, we just have a ginger ( I can say that, cause i'm a ginger too) forcing us to pay for a carbon tax that 70% of Australians don't want.

I say call him on his bluff. He's only using scaremongering bully tactics to shift the blame from his incompetence onto somebody else.

It is pure scare tactics on his part, trying to stir up the seniors against the Repubs. The federal government takes in more than enough tax money on a monthly basis to meet its obligations. The increase in the debt limit is only to increase the budget and add new programs. I hope the House stands firm on this one, but my fear is that they will give in the pressure like they always have.

Did you read the context of the post? I was responding to someone who said they were praying SS would be cut, as I believe you might have also stated the same thing? Then confusingly enough said you would fight for your parent?

How very odd. You pray for it to be cut so you can fight?

My point was, if you are praying for SS to be cut, then you must be praying to Satan.

Understand it now?

ETA: Not that for one minute is this going to happen. He's just trying to get the Republicans to see what might happen if they get their wishes.
Might cost more to build all those bridges for the elderly to live under.

This is such a bluff. Social Security isn't even a problem at the moment. Its my understanding the program is solvent for the next 20 years or so. This is just a fear tactic to get the Republicans to deal. However if we do default the government gets to pick and choose which programs to fund.

There are solutions.

Ron Paul offered the solution of absolving ourselves of our debt to ourselves. That would free up 1.3 trillion and it wouldn't impact a single person! Both sides have also agreed in principle to making the necessary concessions. This Blog has a video clip where both debators agree to the demands of the other side! Obama has also agreed to many of the Republican demands, but the Reps don't seem to have noticed.

What we need is the most radical parts of both sides implemented. We need deep budgetary cuts, we need to do away with the tax loopholes, we need to leave the debt ceiling steadfast and find work arounds, we need to shave the Federal Government down to "snow day" size as Ron Paul puts it. We need to begin legislation that will slowly shrink the debt ceiling incrementally and force the government to operate within its budget!

There are solutions, if they ignore them, fine, let the whole dam thing crash. We can build a better one!

I just can't believe that US Active Military
is allowing this criminal to assault Senior
Citizens.

Instead you will allow Senior Citizens
to fight your battles for you ???

Figures....
when a country is in trouble the low incomes will be hurt first and the hardest

Just wondering how long they will keep up with this, they have nothing to loose if they have nothing at all.
