Hi,

I'm not reporting a UFO as such (as my explanation will hopefully outline) but I didn't know where else to put this request. Mods, after reading please feel free to move at will if this isn't the correct place.

I live on the 6th floor of an apartment block on the River Mersey in Liverpool. This means I've got an excellent view out across the Wirral peninsular, and on clear days can see right across to Wales.

On Friday night me and my girlfriend were watching TV. She glanced out of the window and asked "What is that?"

I looked out and could see a large orange object moving slowly in the sky over the Wirral. At a rough estimate I'd say it was a good mile or two away. I had my binoculars handy so immediately picked it out in the sky.

I'd say it was just under the size of a small light aircraft. It was a very typical saucer shape. However I knew for a fact it was a large lantern of some sort. I could see the flicker of the flames, and one side of it died out alot earlier than the other. The speed of it was incredibly slow as it was a very still night, again allowing for me to pick out the detail that I've described as above.

I know there are some Wirral users on Above Top Secret, so my question is - is there someone doing this regularly over there? This sighting comes around 3 weeks after I saw around 100 lanterns all go up in the sky at the same time from the same area (around Bidston Hill) and that one prompted the police helicopter to be scrambled.

I'm not reporting a UFO as I said in my opening sentence. I'm merely intrigued as to who is behind these launches, and if they are trying to trigger a newspaper report on the hoax. I've done numerous searches on google but to no avail. All Wirral reports on ATS also seem to be from 2 years ago.

Any info would be much appreciated!

Haha. I was just sitting down with my first coffee when I came across your thread, OP, and I thought to myself that someone probably doesn't know how to spell 'viral'. So geography lesson learned instead, what? Raising my cup to you and ATS for that.

Because I'm so incredibly slow on the uptake it took me ages to figure out what you was going on about with the whole viral thing.

D'oh

Hi,

Chinese Lanterns have become very, very popular at all sorts of parties and celebrations. They are not only launched by UFO hoaxers.

The main sighting mentioned in the OP was on a Friday night, one of the more popular nights for a party/celebration.

A year or two ago, I tried to look into one sighting which I thought could be explained by Chinese Lanterns. While trying to find a wedding or other celebration that took place on the relevant time that released Chinese Lanterns at about the right time, I found that there had been TWO weddings that released Chinese Lanterns at about that time in that area on that day...

Some of the believers on this website would be astonished if they knew how common Chinese Lanterns have become (and how many UFO sightings each week are caused by Chinese Lanterns)!

All the best,

Isaac

I'm aware of how popular they are. I see them go up every night for one reason or another. My main query though was in relation to the customised one on Friday night. It was designed to look like a 'saucer' type UFO. If anything it was a failed experiment with the left hand side of it extinguishing long before the right, causing it to be lop-sided and not last very long in the air (a minute or two at most).

I've tried finding out if there were any festivals or some such that night in that area to have launched this from, but nothing, which leads me to think this was an individual trying to fool people.

Lanterns have become a bit of a distraction for UFOlogy.

I just wish that more people who claim to be interested in the subject would buy some and go out and play around. Film some, photograph some, watch from a distance and from where they are released. I'm sure if people took my advice many of the pointless videos that get boringly posted on here would not be.

It is amazing how many times I have been accused of spreading disinformation or being in denial after correctly identifying lanterns.
