Dear MisterBurns

Sorry but you are forgetting something.

It is not about executing the perpetrator or putting them behind bars for ever.

That just is not the point.

The point is that this punishment is there and it puts the rest of the population off committing the crime.

It is down to control by the state.

The same reason that the Romans used Crucifixion.

As for deterrence, I know that many of us obey the speed limit because we are aware of both the punishment if caught and the inadvertent or undesirable consequences that can accompany speeding. Likewise many responsible drinkers will arrange for someone sober to drive them home (designated driver) So I'll say that deterrence can have a positive effect. And as for the death penalty being a deterrence, what would happen if all divorcees thought they could get away with killing their partner? Same for potential cop killers.

I do understand that you're talking about a different kind of mind when it comes to child molesters and worse. But I often wonder if people who give into their own desires do so simply because they can get away with it, such as a deviant parent or sibling. It's for certain that they don't consider the effect of their behavior on their victim and on society, because maybe they have convinced themselves that they won't have to suffer any consequences, believing they won't get caught. At some point they must weigh the consequences of what they're doing before giving themselves permission to enact their crime.

But even if they arent deterred, the rest of us in society must know that the death penalty / or life behind bars is there as punishment.

The current mindset is that 30 years in prison will cure a murderer.

...the current mindset of who?... idiots?... i think you made that up...

...btw, neither prison or the death penalty are MEANT TO BE deterrents... they are penalties... big difference...

The death penalty won't deter future capital felonies by those that have never performed them before. But it does end this one persons ability to engage in another capital felony, which statically is inevitable. When the cancer is located, it must be cut out.

Fact is....the death penalty is a deterrent to some therefore it works. Even if one person is deterred that is what matters. For anyone to say otherwise is not looking at this with logic.

Many people out there are afraid of what comes after death or afraid to "meet their maker"...so they will do whatever it takes to avoid that.

No punishment. Not a single ONE is 100% deterrent: preventing all from committing a crime.

With that said...I believe a better punishment for the likes of murderers, rapists, child abusers, etc...is to dig a hole and throw the criminal in it and feed them bread and water and nothing more.

I agree with the poster. The death penalty or the threat of prison is NOT a deterrent to child rape, rape, murder and more. I also feel that there is something fundamentally wrong with the genetic/psychological makeup of these predatory perpetrators. I believe these sexual deviants have something wrong with them that is akin to someone with a developmental disorder aka mental retardation. They lack the ability to follow society's rules and social morals. None the less, they are dangerous and should be locked up when they commit their horrid atrocities.

I wish I knew of a way to rehab them and restore them to fully functioning capable adults. Alas, no one has the answer other than locking them away in a cage or killing them. I am against the death penalty. Although if someone killed one of my family members I probably would sing a different song. Sadly, I have no answers or cures.

Disclaimer: the following does not constitute a defense for rapists, pedo's and such
in most cases these people are beyond any hope of salvation/being cured IMO

an ounce of prevention is worth a few pounds of cure [factoring inflation]

study mentioned in video
it seems there will be little need for much more studying these creatures [created beings] this study has most if not all the answers.

since 1975

BODY PLEASURE AND THE ORIGINS OF VIOLENCE

These findings overwhelmingly support the thesis that deprivation of body pleasure throughout life—but particularly during the formative periods of infancy, childhood, and adolescence—are very closely related to the amount of warfare and interpersonal violence. These insights should be applied to large and complicated industrial and postindustrial societies. Crime and physical violence have substantially increased over the past decade in the United States. According to FBI statistics, both murder and aggravated assault increased 53 percent between 1967 and 1972, while forcible rape rose 70 percent. These figures again raise the question of the special relationship between sexuality and violence. In addition to our rape statistics, there is other evidence that points to preference for sexual violence over sexual pleasure in the United States. This is reflected in our acceptance of sexually explicit films that involve violence and rape, and our rejection of sexually explicit films for pleasure only (pornography). Neighborhood movie theaters show such sexually violent films as Straw Dogs, Clockwork Orange, and The Klansman, while banning films which portray sexual pleasure (Deep Throat, The Devil in Miss Jones). Attempts to close down massage parlors are another example of our anti-pleasure attitudes. Apparently, sex with pleasure is immoral and unacceptable, but sex with violence and pain is moral and acceptable. A questionnaire I developed to explore this question was administered to 96 college students whose average age was 19 years. The results of the questionnaire support the connection between rejection of physical pleasure (and particularly of premarital and extramarital sex) with expression of physical violence. Respondents who reject abortion, responsible premarital sex, and nudity within the family were likely to approve of harsh physical punishment for children and to believe that pain helps build strong moral character. These respondents were likely to find alcohol and drugs more satisfying than sex. The data obtained from the questionnaire provide strong statistical support for the basic inverse relationship between physical violence and physical pleasure. If violence is high, pleasure is low, and conversely, if pleasure is high, violence is low. The questionnaire bears out the theory that the pleasure-violence relationship found in primitive cultures also holds true for a modern industrial nation.

in ancient India murderers and such received the death penalty
the justification for this was that in being executed, karmic debt was payed off.

some of the violent "solutions" proposed reveal a sadistic desire to inflict pain, the difference is one of degrees.

that said:
just one innocent sent to the gas chamber or the chair is one too many

just lock them up
1 person to an isolation cell/white room and no contact at all with other human beings ever again , not even guards food comes through a slot in the wall.

those that are innocent or can be cured will benefit from the enforced self-reflection.

psychopaths and incurables will self destruct.

nobody else has to dirty their hands.
