Ahmed Chalabi, who was charged by Iraq last week of counterfeiting, returned to Baghdad to face the accusation. He claims it is an effort to discredit him politically. Chalabi's nephew, Salem, was also accused of being involved in the murder of the Iraqi Finance Ministry Official, he also denies any involvement. Mithaal Alousi, a member of Chalabi's political party, said that the charges against Ahmed have been delayed and that the Iraqi police have no immediate plans to arrest Chalabi. Chalabi's (Iraqi National Congress) party were expelled from their Baghdad HQ's by Iraqi Intelligence agents and police on Wednesday.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq has delayed implementing counterfeiting charges against politician Ahmad Chalabi, who returned to Baghdad to face the accusations, an official in his political party said on Thursday.

Mithaal Alousi told reporters Chalabi had not seen the charges and had been informed that they "have been postponed."

This story seems far from clear, why would Reuters say the charges have been delayed, but only quote a member of Chalabi's INC party as the source, wouldn't this news need to be credited to an Iraqi government official since they were the ones who laid out the allegations last week. I will keep looking for more reports which could clarify the current situation.

It is so funny that this man was supported by the US congress, the Pentagon and parts of the CIA.

He was crocked then and he is still crooked now. Even his own people did not want him in Iraq and he though that the US was going to back him up so he could take power in Iraq.

i wonder if the fact that Allawi and Chalabi are cousins will play a part in the outcome of the charges against Chalabi, so far Iyad Allawi hasn't said much about his cousin and nephew, but it does make you wonder about all these family members in politics.
