The 168-year-old newspaper has been embroiled in a row about the hacking of mobile phones.
It is the UK's best-selling newspaper and reportedly the most read English language paper.

Any bit of Murdochs power that can be taken away is a good thing.

I searched and i think this is the first to mention the breaking news about the closure of the paper. It's a very interesting development. Some are saying it will play into Ruperts hands because now he has less influence in the media the government will give him full control of Sky, which has revenue that dwarfs the NofW

I think it will be a case of taking with one hand while giving with the other

It's just a cynical attempt to halt the current backlash against the Murdoch empire. I hope the public see through it and continue to question the company's questionable ethics and practices - putting pressure on the B$kyB takeover.

It's only the brand that's closing. Give it a few weeks and The Sun will go 7 days a week in the NOTW's place.

closing the paper but not sacking rebekah brooks is scandalous. The staff currently at NOTW had nothing to do with the phone hacking. Basically this is murdoch trying to save his takeover of BSKYB in the UK. He's sacrificed the journos and brooks stays as an executive of news corp. He's hoping this will be enough to placate everyone and save his attempted takeover of bskyb

newscorps name is mud now and Murdoch is reeling. I hope it gets worse for him.
