"Iraq's interim vice-president on Wednesday called on foreign troops to leave the holy Shia city of Najaf, as American commanders said they were readying US and Iraqi forces for a final push against the rebel cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

Adding to international concern over the pending showdown, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, denounced the assault as "one of the darkest crimes of humanity", and a "dark blemish which will never be wiped from the face of America"."

news.ft.com...

Well, US *cough*handed Iraq back to it's *cough*leaders so if they say US troops must leave then shouldn't they obey, wasn't that the deal?

I believe it was the iraqi V.P. who wants the troops to leave.
The Iraqi Prime Minister is for the troops being there.

More than half of the Najaf government council members have resigned in protest to the assault on Najaf.

Herald Sun:
SIXTEEN of Najaf's 30-member provincial council resigned today in protest at the US-led assault on the central Iraqi city.

"We have decided to resign due to what has befallen Najaf and all of Iraq from the hasty US invasion and bombardment of Najaf," the council said in a statement received by AFP.

If ur gonna try to make the new government at all credible, you have to respect their right to perhaps take differing tactical approaches. If they screw up, then you assist in picking up the pieces. What is expensive in the shortterm, will pay back abounds when the government is seen to be an Iraqi government, and then supported as such by the people.

Not matter how you put this into perspective it is an assault on the Iraqis believes, this people or council members do not wish to have their families and selves blown to a kingdom high because their support to the coalition US led.

After all they are Iraqis and they have to side with their fellow country men.
Despite speculations it was a reason why the Al-jazzera was shot down and the true is Iraq is a mess and its getting messier by the hour.

its nice to know that not all the Intrim govt members are total puppets for the coalition generals....

VERY small silver lining... but credibility is like mushrooms, after months of darkness and horse#e, it can spring up in the most unlikely places... even a western backed intrim regime!
