FYI

1.30pm: The Evening Standard reports that Met police "received more than £100,000 in unlawful payments from senior journalists and executives at the News of the World", and that arrests will be made within days:

Remember this is JUST the NotW newspaper.........

How much more goes on with others we are yet to discover........?

Also Tesco are going to KEEP advertising in the paper and I have noted people already saying Boycott Tesco's stores...

I would expect if one is doing this then I would not be surprised if all (maybe not to the same degree) have and do use a similar approach..

Of the back of this I can not help but wonder how endemic this practice is throughout the country...

And are we going to get to the point where we try to work out who is not involved rather than who is involved!

But still... Vince Cables words that this is a war does not seem far off the mark...

The Crown Office has asked Strathclyde Police for a 'preliminary assessment' of the Tommy Sheridan case.

Sheridan's lawyer Aamer Anwar and Labour MP Tom Watson are questioning Sheridan's conviction and are holding a press conference at 3.00pm.

www.bbc.co.uk...

Whilst I understand people's disgust at the actions of the 'journalists' and News International and it's employees I think they should really scrutinise the role of the police and their immoral and illegal practices, the most questionable judgement shown by Cameron and the incestuous relationship between past and present administrations, News International and senior police officers.

Sure as night follows day News International will carry the brunt of the blame, some middle ranking police officers will be disciplined quietly away from the public eye and the politicians will escape scot free.

And those behind the scenes who are orchestrating it all for their own ends will remain anonymous in the shadows.

Prior to the last election I considered Vince Cable as one of the few politicians with any integrity and credebility.
I was deeply disgusted with him when he joined the cabinet and did a complete 360 over student fees etc.

But then came that 'leaked' declaration of war against Murdoch and News International.

Cable has stated that he will choose his fights and, being an exceptonally shrewd and intelligent man, is well aware of the benefits of fighting from the inside.

Cable also has many friends and contacts within the high ranking business community and is very much part of 'the Old Boys Network'.

Hmm.....now I wonder?

The same feelings I have over my own MP Norman Baker who I thought (after the Dr Kelly affair) was a man of real integrity (Yep I brought into that *shakes head*) but once they get a sniff of power it all seems to go out the window no matter the principle or colour of tie..

I guess I was trying to imply that given Vince Cables words this release of information fullfills an agenda and that agenda had little to do with bringing justice to anyone or uncovering corruption but rather just to knee cap Murdocks plans of conquest and control.

Which just proves to my mind the system (top to bottom) needs knocking down and rebuilding..

To both Freeborn and Thoughtful..

I think your previous two posts illustrate exactly the dilemma that Politicians face in todays world.....

Some, the two you mention might have 'good intentions' and 'want to make a real difference' in being a politician BUT they are bound by the ridiculous rules of party politics which effectively remove the right of free speech..
Add to this mix the power that these media empires have and what we really have in the UK and probably broader the World are a lot of puppet MP's who have to try and barter deals, horse trade with allsorts to maintain their political careers.....

It is this apparent clash of interests which makes everyone suspious to the true motivations........

With the Police now being called into question along with other emergencgy services the whole thing, like yoy suggest Thoughtful needs knocking down and re-building............. What a Thanksless job thats going to be.....!

I think both you and thoughtsfull are aware of my utter contempt for our failed party political system.

Unfortunately despite all the corruption and hypocrisy there is little chance of achieving any meaningful reform when the vast majority have become content with a force fed diet of who is shagging who, X Factor, Premier League Football and face nothing more challenging and demanding than deciding should it be Jeremy or Trisha..

Serious political debate is not on the agenda.

As I said previously, people will be quite content blaming those unscrupulous scum bag journalist bastards without asking more probing questions and demandingr real action from our elected officials.

I know exactly where you are coming from and sadly have to agree that the chances of anything meaningful coming from this utterly disgusting mess will be the demise of the NoTW.. (at least in name)

But they are sailing very close to the wind with the other scandals still fresh in peoples minds.. and I do beleive at the rate they are going that some point they will come a cropper.

I can only hope it is sooner rather than later

Assets owned by Rupert Murdoch through News Corp

I hope the whole house of cards comes tumbling down but thats probably wishful thinking.

Hope the quote is not too long, felt it was necessary to list for anyone that is not aware of the sheer influence Rupert Murdoch has on the worlds media. Its a disgrace in my opinion, especially that the corruption is rearing its head.

The News of the World closure sounds like damage control to me, the really sad part is that honest hard working people that are not corrupt are the ones that will suffer from losing their jobs while the corrupt people get away with it all.

Exactly.
It's the poor guy's on the printing press and delivery drivers etc who will suffer most.
Who is going to pay their mortgage or put next weeks Sunday Lunch on the table?

There simply aren't any jobs out there.

But I'm sure Mrs Brookes will be mighty fine in her Chipping Norton set and that smug, arrogant twat Coulson will be looked after.

I have just read in full James Murdoch's statement about the closure of The News Of The World.

news.uk.msn.com...

I must say it's a tremendous piece of literature and I really wish I could believe that he was being truthful with the sentiments he expressed.

However I suspect a more accurate version of his true feelings would be something like this;

I would just like to say how much we regret to announce but this weeks edition of The News Of The World will be the last edition.

Unfortunately we have been found out and advertisers are leaving us in their droves.
Despite the obscene amount of wealth we have amassed over the years we are not prepared to run this paper at a loss.

Alas the immoral and illegal actions of the few must affect the whole.
But rest assured, those responsible for this will be looked after whilst unfortunately the responsible journalists amongst you will be tarred with the same brush and will probably never work again.
Fortunately you will not be alone in the dole office as all those shop floor workers who it had absolutely nothing to do with will never work again as there simply aren't any other jobs.

But we don't care because we really couldn't give a toss about any of you.

Now where did I put Charlotte and Lukes phone numbers?

Very good alternative statement, and likely very close to the truth.

While I really dislike the tabloids (and, in fact, much of the UK media lol), it is pretty disgusting that many innocent people will now lose their jobs while the top brass will just continue as they were. I also do not look forward to the left wing media "celebrating" this supposed victory, simply because it is nothing of the sort. It's a very cynical attempt at damage limitation, and paves the way for The Sun to become a 7 days a week publication.

Just thought I'd keep this updated, I know it's not as important as Obamas birth certificate, but still deserves to be kept alive.
Apparently sub editors of the Sun have walked out in solidarity with their sacked colleagues at the NofW. Staff just tossed aside by the Murdoch empire while the real culprits go scot free.

n solidarity with colleagues at the News of the World, tonight Sub-Editors at The Sun newspaper have walked out of work in protest.

At the same time as the protest, inside the building, News of the World staff were being told about the redundancies.

The company has told staff they will receive a 90 day payment which covers the legally required consultation period for job cuts.

This exposes the cynical deceit of James Murdoch who earlier today said: “We will communicate next steps in detail and begin appropriate consultation.”
