I was watching an urban farming video yesterday... and learned that people around CA are taking over vacant lots and growing gardens without the permission of landowners. The only problem I have with this (for safety reasons)... is that they have no idea what was on that land before they decided to SQUAT FARM the property. And if they're selling that produce to the public... I for one would be very concerned... as there could have been a toxic chemical spill on that land... and the public buying the produce on the roadside would be none the wiser.

This is why I sell my stuff by word of mouth to neighbors and friends. The whole thing has become CRAZY!

It sure makes me feel all warm and cozy knowing USDA OWNS the word ORGANIC!

Oh well, I have always preferred the term HOME GROWN anyway

That is a good point but in most cases I believe, people selling at farm markets usually own their own little garden plots and know exactly what is on it.

I would also think that a chemical spill is more prone to happen on larger commercial plots of land.

A small city plot? Perhaps but I think less likely.

IMO

This thread reminds me of the 1981 movie BITTER HARVEST with Ron Howard.

Organic is a label used for food worldwide.

The USDA isn't the world police, they need to go run back to mommy crying because someone slapped their wrist for being naughty.

All people need to do it is "Keep on keeping on" tell the USDA to shove it and ignore this stupid idea.

Organic is a a scientific term for a compound that contains a carbon atom in its molecular makeup.

All food contains carbon.

The USDA is bluffing.
