The OP said, this guy was in the National Guard. To go there; I'd say you would have to have some values, patriotism, a belief in your government etc.
For me it's not too hard to imagine, how someone like that would feel, if he learned that those who he used to serve, in fact were cruel liars.
Maybe it's not, that people like those poor guy lose grip reality for a bit, but that they got TOO MUCH reality and lost their faith in everything
they once believed in.
It takes a strong mind to face the reality, that this world got so unspeakable sick, that finally only a god or something like that could get us out
of this mess, ourselves drove us into.
