Which is why I think many nations should just default on what they owe the World Bank and IMF our Federal Reserve, etc.

he is not socialist, he is communist, and more than communist he is a traitor that has given the sovereign of Venezuela to Cuba. Fidel has been wanting to put his hands into Venezuela since the 60's. He tried by military power and got defeated, but what Venezuelans never expected is that Fidel would make his dream come true by invading from within.
Conspiracy? yes there is one, and it is orchestrated by $90 Billion Chavez has used since he got in power to control the image of his XXI century revolution. It is the most outrageous budget for propaganda a ruler has ever spent in the world.
You think that the poor are happier now than they were before? Wrong!! The poor are poorer, and a new class of rich people emerged conformed by the people in power (government) and their links to guerrilla, drug trafficking, and all kinds of crooks you can imagine.
Venezuela lives a non declared war, were more people are killed in the streets than any other ongoing war in the world. There is just a big chaos, because the law is the law of Chavez (Fidel and the G2) and the ones around get to traffic drugs with the support of what $90 Billion spent in propaganda makes look like a decent socialist caring government that helps the poor.
Venezuelans (those that are not in the government) have seen how the biggest income in its history because of high oil prices, has been literally thrown out of the window as gifts to every latin american country, Caribbean country, and even to more developed countries like England, and the US, either to create sympathy (e,g,: free heating oil for poor communities in Boston and NY), or to pay for the silent invasion to other latin american countries paying for supporters and introducing weapons. In the meanwhile the country is falling into pieces with zero investment in infrastructure, the destruction of the concept of private property (and the economical consequences of such), and the dismantling of what used to be the military and police forces of the country to the point that Cuban military are ruling openly the Venezuelan military.
I would not be surprised to see here a lot of posts talking wonders about Chavez, as one of his investments in his $90B propaganda is what he himself called "the communication guerrilla", and he has a staff dedicated only to create followers on twitter and flood the internet with propaganda.
It is disgusting...
But him dying because of cancer does not change much in the panorama. Venezuela has been taken over by Cuba at every level of the government. So even if he died, there would be a lot to be done to even consider Venezuela a country that has a democracy, a credible voting system, supports human rights and guides through a Constitution (1999) that right now is just a dead written letter.

Colombia has been doing great since Chavez came to power and it has all to do with the destruction of the economy. For every closed factory, expropiated farm, closed business...a Colombian factory, farm or business has gone up. The crooks of the government make money in commisions of imports while the jobs inside the country go down the toilet. Add to it, that the guerrilla found a paradise in Venezuela, where they are protected by the government....and no wonder, that the horrible crime rate that used to be in Colombia, just moved to Venezuela. Venezuela welcomes all crooks in the world....

If the US wanted Chavez out, he would be out a long time ago. Chavez propaganda makes you believe that, just like Fidel has been saying the US has been trying to kill him during the last 50 years...They need an enemy, real or not to gain power and rule over fear.
As long as Venezuela supplies the Oil to the US, the US government does not care, or at least has not cared in the last 12 years.
Everybody ignores Chavez threat, because so far he has been a threat only to its own people, a clown to the international community, and Santa Claws for the latin american region with all he has gifted. In the meanwhile his "revolution" is funded with the oil the US buys from Venezuela, and Venezuelans see how their country gets destroyed every day.
