The whole point of the exercise was that it is above board legal approved by the FEC and illustrates what the citizens united decision did to the election process. Perhaps you didn't notice (most voters didn't notice) all the campaign ads telling you you were going to die from socialism if you elected democrats -- were funded by PACs who didn't have to be clear about their donors -- for instance the Chamber of Commerce and all the foreign money they used, but could deny because they used the foreign money for other things; didnt deny that the had gotten foreign money but they really didn't have to say who gave them the money to sway the elections.

So if some billionare wants to give a billion to Colberts PAC and Colbert can spend it how ever he wants, such as convincing (swiftboating) people that Romney is actually a lizard person,you will never know who is buying the votes. Oh hey isn't this how the Koch brothers are buying votes. Looks different when the dirty tricks are being played on you --- dont it.

So it will help some and folks will make a big deal of it because the media likes the notion that media figures are icons. After the analysis I would predict that he will have generated little net-new cash for Obama

I agree...don't think obama would need it anyway as he will get plenty of money from virtually everywhere. And whether we like him or not, he's an excellent campaigner. Certainly won't need Colbert's help.

Colbert is doing this just to bring attention to Super Pacs which he is successfully doing.
