Religion is a nasty word,

The supernatural is just natural, unrevealed,

Glad you started this thread, Stormdancer! Good to get this idea out there.

It's interesting that many of the truly enlightened people from various faiths simply use their religion as a vehicle to keep people open and understanding to the concept of a higher reality. Many saints, swamis, yogis, and prophets probably wink towards one another, realizing they are all on the same page, regardless of what shape their hats and churches are.

I think that this is what Buddhists like Thich Nhat Hanh are saying. One does not necessarily need to "become
a Buddhist" to get the same Spiritual effects; one might even adopt some Buddhist practices but certainly continue to use Jesus as their Spiritual focus/center.

A Westerner, for example, raised with a different set of Spiritual figures might get more benefits/understanding from meditating/praying to the model of Spirituality s/he is most familiar with, rather than trying to adopt a figure outside their upbringing. OTOH one of my sisters, raised in a Western religion and who has continued to use her Church for Spiritual growth, has a devotion to Kwan Yin.

What a great time in which to live!
