I'm pretty sure there's a mention in MGS2 about how the Patriots must be allowed to survive - wheteher you consider them good or bad. It also refers to an AI carrying out what it considers to be a simulation, when it actually uses real people, all of which in the AI's mind are completely expendable. Raiden finds out his colonel is actually a partly created entity borne of the AI and his own expectations.

In MGS4 Big boss explains how the system now runs itself, I'm guessing this is a sort of allusion to the idea that if you introduce or encourage greed, lust, pride, anger - and so on - to the individual, then they'll carry on 'playing the game' until they break the cycle themself.

Yes, you are correct. The President mentions that the Patriots must survive (which baffles Raiden lol).

The AI thing is slightly confusing, but there's more twists & turns in the MGS storyline than the Rumba.

MGS4, sadly, I haven't played yet...So that's a fail from me

But VanishR mentioned a re-release of a MGS HD Collection ocming out in November, that sounds amazing...So I'm gonna have a look at that for sure!

You guys DO understand that these are marketing ploys?

Well then, they are extremely clever marketing ploys (or not) since I don't think many of us knew that Hideo Kojima would include sub-plots about Illuminati, AI's, Internet censorship, etc...

Fantastic game series. I think I preferred MGS2 overall because it went so in depth. A lot of people complained about it because it was Raiden and not Snake, but I didn't let that distract me. To me, MGS1 was more of a game, with the sequels being a fantastic way for Hideo to get all of his thoughts out into the open, even if it did involve going into the codec to hear half the stuff.

The message I took from it was that you can't trust anyone but yourself, and even then trusting yourself can be a bit dodgy, depending on how you've been "programmed" by the world around you.

Because of my love for the series I've held onto all my MGS titles: MGS, MGS: Special missions, MGS2 (with VR missions), MGS3 (complete with Metal Gear from '87 and Metal Gear: Solid Snake from '90) - imagine my horror when I found out my PS3 didn't play PS2 games.

I'd have to rate MGS2 as one of the greatest entertainment experiences of my life and MGS4 as one of the most frustrating - that is a game is desperate need of editing. Those cut-scenes have always gone on a bit, but MGS4 was beyond a joke.

The whole metal gear series is basically based on a whole bunch of conspiracies though mostly having to do with a type of Illuminati/secret world order type of thing. And it's basically just packed with plots and subplots, to keep the show going.

Kojima was influenced by lots of things both in books and movies, in fact even the main protagonist of the video games "Snake" is derived from the escape from la movies with Kurt Russel, who the main character in the movies is "Snake Plissken"

There is even a part in metal gear 2 from what I remember were snake goes by the name of Plissken to hide his identity from Raiden, in the beginning of the game when the two main protagonists meet.

Even down to the whole eye patch thing that snake wears in some of his many incarnations of his original self "big boss" the original snake, of which his clones solid snake and liquid snake is what the main story's of the metal gears games revolve around, and it come's down to a showdown between them in the end. Anyways like in the movies the character Snake Plissken wears an eye patch and in the game big boss/Snake wears an eye-patch.

And there are many more little hints in the games from the movies, and whole bunch of conspiracies that are in the game, the version of the Illuminati in the game the La-li-lu-le-lo is not the only one, and there a whole bunch of other plots and little conspiracies that they put in the game here and there throughout the whole series. Like you said the whole proxy wars and corporations control, even nano tech control of people conspiracies and a bunch of other stuff.

In fact I am thinking of replaying some of the metal gear games, since there is nothing really that interesting out right now to play and I am pretty bored.

Ya to me at least MGS2 is the best experience I had with any of the games in the series. Everybody complained about how more then half the game was about Raiden and not Snake, but I think it ended up being better that way and way better in the plot department because of that.

It kept you guessing what was going on and what was going to happen, if it was another game just about snake again. Then you pretty much know what was going to happen and it would of not been as cool.

But like my_republic said on page 1 if you all like metal gear. And if you have not played it, then Zone of the Enders the second runner, is another game by Kojima that is really good, and I would recommend playing. Though its more of a action game and there really is no conspiracies in it, it's still one of the best games out there.

At least till part three of the ZOE games, comes out.

Haha, I remember that bit in the game, where Snake calls himself Plissken!

Kojima took ideas from that Kurt Russell film & other things...But, everyone draws inspiration in what they create from life, right?

I get what you mean though. There are a lot of similarities & parallels to things in the game that he obviously got his ideas from.

But I like to think there's no smoke without fire, sorta thing.
