That way, local bands of wacko guards will not be able to turn blind eyes to either inmate on inmate crimes - or guard on inmate crimes.

I agree whole heartedly; not only have them under 24/7 constant monitoring by a third party but make them do hard labor all day as well. They might be tired enough to not fight and plan more crime. I work 10-12 hours a day at hard labor on my dairy farm - it's not going to kill anyone.

The penal system is so PC now days the prisoners sit around go to school and work out. Then they have time to rape each other, traffic drugs and such...

In no way should prisoners be able to have enough freedom in prison to do anything unobserved and especially unpunished.

Contrary to popular belief, most of the perpetrators were not other prisoners but staff members—corrections officials whose job it is to keep inmates safe.

IMHO... that is the one thing that should be debated before we even get into the prisoner on prisoner abuse. To think that corrections officers are doing most of the raping is far more disturbing for me.

How true is that statement?

This was my point, yes.

I know that there are certain lines you cross in life that you can never go back from. Once you kill someone for the first time, it is easier the second time. Once you rape someone, you lose a large chunk of your humanity, and chances are that you'll do it again, just because you know you can.

This is why I find it disturbing that police are doing a lot of the raping. It's making them into emotionally hardened monsters with no compassion for fellow men. How many of these police rapists get transferred to street cops, SWAT teams, riot squads or promoted through the ranks?

As a fellow poster pointed out, there is also a rape epidemic throughout the American military. How willing are these soldiers to rape civilians on foreign soil, or worse?

There is a serious problem when, in a liberal society, those tasked with maintaining justice are actually the criminals themselves.

No wonder why the neocon government in Canada wants to invest undisclosed amounts of funding into building new supermax prisons for "unreported crimes"

Great thread...but what exactly are unreported crimes?

How can there be offenders of unreported crimes? I do not get it!! Is it a typo?

"Unreported crimes" was the term that Stockwell Day used to justify the necessity for new maximum security prisons in Canada (he was the minister in charge of public safety at the time). Remember, the Harper government was held in contempt of parliament for not disclosing federal funding for these new prisons and F-35s, and now the Harper government has a majority.

I mention all this because our police seem to be following the American example more and more. As is, the RCMP are already cold government dogs with guns. More prisons means more crimes, more arrests, and tighter standards for Canadian lives enforced by more hardened police forces.

It is a sad state people are facing in America, but it is not just in America, in Iraq 90% of hostages taken by the occupying forces were innocent, but still torture and rape was implemented against them systematically.

Exactly!

New "criminal offences" are being made every day

Look into the "Freeman" Movement

In america youd probably get shot by a cop for trying it on but round here the cops are afraid of us

A good documentary about Miamis largest jail.

It must be a living hell in one of these jails. You are still considered innocent in these places because you are awaiting trial. It makes British prisons look like holiday camps.

I live in the state of Ohio in the US, and did three years for having 6 1/2 pounds of marijuana in my trunk in a car that I picked up at a car auction, bringing vehicles back to my boss. I got pulled over because my magnetic dealers plate somehow slid down and was about to fall off.

Now when I was in prison, there was no time for plotting or whatnot. My typical day in there was being up and ready at 5:30am. Then we would eat and pile into the buses to be taken to work sites. My job was painting semi-trucks, as in the outside world, that is what I was doing for a living. We worked for 6 1/2 hours, got a 30 minute break to drink water and smoke a cigarette or whatnot, then we would work another 6 1/2 hours. After that, we piled back into the buses, headed back to the prison, then ate, slept, and repeated. I was lucky enough to get showers 3 times a week, which is something not most got.

Perhaps others should take after how that prison is ran. I never got raped, threatened, or anything. The main problem there was how overcrowded it was. My cell alone had 4 people in it. I had the luxury of sleeping by the toilet.

Would also like to add, that a very good friend of mine was recently locked up for a similar incident. He purchased a computer from an auction, and later found child pornography on it. He immediately reported it, but the police turned it completely around on him. So while he is in prison for 5 years, his 12 year old son and 11 year old daughter will be harassed in school about there father. I know this will happen, because back when I was in school, a classmates father was a science teacher there and was locked up for molesting her when she was younger. Instead of her getting sympathy, she got teased and picked on until she eventually went to home schooling.

I know of many other local horror stories like mine and his where innocent people are locked up.

Best policy to not get raped in prison is: "Anything you put in my mouth you gonna lose.

there should be some sort of serious penalty....and whoever is guilty should lose their right to serve the public for life.

Even at that low rate it is still a horrendous problem.

One in a billion is too often.

Experts say it is likely that incidents of rape in British prisons are heavily under-reported. According to figures released by the government in response to parliamentary questions, there were 119 allegations of sexual assault in prison in 2008, but only 33 were subject to a PSO1300 investigation. Guardian article

"There are clear reasons why rape and sexual assault would go unreported in prison," Neilson said. "Not only will it be difficult to prove in many instances, but telling a member of staff that you have been raped would see prisoners ostracised and vulnerable to bullying. We believe the 119 recorded incidents of sexual assault in prison are likely to be a serious underestimation of the problem. In that context, the fact that only 33 internal investigations were then commissioned seems a pitiful response from the authorities."

Holy crappp bro! that sucks

Its a disgrace when people are getting locked up for a plant that u could BUY IN CHEMISTS AROUND THE WORLD only 150 years ago & in the 1600's ALL land owners had to donate 5% of their land to grow hemp for the queens war effort

Love your avatar Guy, thats why I will never be taken alive. In fact if the cops ever did come after me i`ll take a few of them down with. After all the stories of corruption and police brutality and after what Nashville Metro did to me, Fagitaboutit.

Edit: I can see where you got me saying bad people were getting raped, from. I should have said: No one feels bad for the "bad guy"

You're wrong..I for one feel sorry for the any "petty" criminal who has to endure rape. No one should have to suffer that kind of humiliation ...(unless of course its a serial rapist

I know yeah dont get me wrong, the sick thing is that its all to easy for political activists who are jailed to get beat up/raped - whatever... coz the guards DO turn a blind eye to certain people.

Everyones heard of that famous case where some black guy was banged up in a cell with a white supremacist... cant remember where that was but here in england certain prisoners do give/receive favours from the screws and a feel sorry for all the unlucky ones who it must have felt like a livin hell they cant escape from , trapped from the outside world etc.

The point is that as innocent and goodie-too-shoes you may be, YOU can still end up in a jail or prison.

On the very least you can go to jail while you await charges being dropped.

The times I've been in jail I was surprised at the variety of people who get sent there. We had doctors, lawyers, preachers, everything in there. Some guilty, some innocent. I know one old guy was sent there because his son had drugs in the house, however wasn't home so either the old guy or his wife had to go down for it.

You fail to realize how easily you can step over the line of the law.

What do you mean non U.S. jail? You think this only happens in America? Try going to a South American prison! Or one in the middle east. And god forbid one in Afrika!

It also depends upon your ethnicity....sorry my white males, but in prison YOU are the women.

Get ready for this thread to be closed, internet censorship has come to ATS, there was a recent thread similar to this one about rapists and what they would do when SHTF. I thought it was a good discussion going on in there but i guess somebody didn`t

Does anyone remember the govenor in Texas who was trying to fight and eliminate prison rape? There was such a resistance from the system and a conspiracy that the govenor was arrested for some b.s. charge. They put him in a holding tank with over 30 guys, and then the guards instigated those other inmates into raping the govenor. He says he was raped by over 20 guys in the little time he spent there.

I can't remember the guys name, a google should help someone find him though.

are you serious?.....Its sad when the people who are trying to do the right thing...pay so dearly for it. Exposing the corruption in law, in prisons, and in government seems to be a hard battle to win at times.

Is it any wonder people don't stand up against corruption ? They often can't afford to live with the consequences.

What a sorry world we live in !!
