The NRC says its inspectors were at the plant when the berm failed and have confirmed that the flooding has had no impact on the reactor shutdown cooling or the spent fuel pool cooling.

NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko will visit the plant Monday.

Its just that officials NEVER tell the truth especially if its going to kill people.

Maybe god is telling us to find another way, other than the most effective and successful way to cultivate cell mutation???

So big question, Are they still running on backup generator power? Or are they back on power grid? lets hope they have external power restored by now. Not sure how many days weeks they have in fuel reserves on hand for generators. Yeah this could explode into new mass disaster. lets hope against all odds that the river starts to subside in crest levels. although going against my better knowledge things are on a slow downward spiral.

Okay, now Drudge has a link saying the berm was a temporary one. Just like the last and primary line of defense around every building in the plant. So, if a tear happened, what exactly caused it? The ONLY reason I have felt good about Fort Calhoun HAS BEEN the little miracles these Aqua Dams have represented. Now they lost one and the Army Corps of Engineers has announced the record release at Gavins Point up river will go on well into August. So just how long can these temporary inner-tube like structures last with LONG term pressure and such of a flood?

This isn't good.

i don't know what exactly is measured, but what disturbes me is the steam rising from the plant wich is said to be shut down in april.

If they were on the grid again I think they would have shorts due to the water.

and they would be gloating that they are on grid power not the generators so i think we would be getting an earful by now if they were running as normal.

all i hope is they started the cooling process already. if not and something happens well I dont want to think about that lets hope they are smart enough.

I'll go and look for the link again, but I think, by shut-down, they meant it is no longer producing nuclear fuel. But it still has rods that need to be cooled down, a process that takes months, I believe.

It was shut down in April for refueling on a routine schedule. So the reactor isn't "Hot" in the sense that it's live, but the fuel may actually be high in quantity with the refueling in progress than it normally would be. Interesting question I sure haven't heard anyone talk about much.

Hey guys, there is a very important detail missing here and it makes the difference between a minor event and a serious indicator of disaster. WHAT KIND OF BERM FAILED? I have been looking and looking and no reference seems to exist as to WHAT berm failed. Only one person quoted as saying a patch was possible. Okay, why does it matter? Well the ONLY reason I have been comfortable about Fort Calhoun up to this point are those ENORMOUS temporary berms that have around every major building. "Aqua Dams" are another name they are called by. If one of THOSE failed around buildings which may not have been real important, then the story is VERY VERY important in finding out how a smaller version of the ONLY real line of defense the entire plant is using now, failed. So...Anyone else hear for sure if this was an artificial or natural berm that failed and caused flooding?

The article stated they switched to Emergency Power because their transformers were threatened by the breach.
Distribution Line voltage is higher than that needed by plant equipment. The 12kv lines (or whatever) feed 12kv (or whatever)/480 v transformers, these then feed 480/208 v. transformers. These transformers were in danger of failing because of water now in the yard and were taken offline.

To restore main power I expect the breach will have to be repaired and the yard pumped dry.

The Emergency Systems will primarily be "Critical" systems (these will include spent fuel and reactor cooling). Whatever diesel they have on hand will be supplemented when necessary. Probably by chopper.

On another smaller site I frequent some of the "locals" explained the "real" reason for the no-fly zones was that the plants had helicopters assigned to them. The helicopters were used for inspections and to ferry supplies, including sandbags and material from safe lay down yards. The "no fly zone" was for the safety and convenience of these choppers.

It's sad the berm was breached. I still think the "F" (Fukushima) word doesn't apply.

What MSM is not telling you is that the NRC people could be complete idiots and it wouldn't matter. The employees at power plants are usually the best of the best, even more so at Nuke Plants. The Operators, Plant Engineers, Wiremen, Pipefitters, Instrument Technicians, etc will be VERY good at what they do. Rest assured they are doing every thing humanly possible to keep us and their families safe.

I wanna dance and start saying I told you so, but not quite yet. This problem has been going on for a month. Why does the corp of engineers think its smart to put nuke plants on flood plains, even worse, with in sight of a river known for historical floods.


I live in Lincoln Ne, there was a haze over the city all day, and now, the storms are coming in with more rain. If I thought praying would do any good I would do it. All we can do is sit by and watch the situation get worse.
