Temporarily, the USGS had two earthquakes posted, as they often do... the two being different hits on the same quake. One was subsequently removed.

We should really be used to this by now.

I get instant alerts on my phone when any EQ is over 6, but 6-7 are really not all that powerful.. they can do some damage but the richter scale is on a curve, it's not linear .. so 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4 .. etc.. are not evenly spaced.. when you get to 7-8, 8-9 they take a MASSIVE jump in strength.. the biggest concern with quakes like these are tsunamis, or hitting in populated areas that aren't properly fortified for earthquakes ..

There's certainly a lot of seismic activity going on and I wouldn't be shocked if another major quake hit along the ring of fire.. I fear California is due for one but I hope not.. it's been a while and they are right in line for one.. it's frightening but it could happen at any time.. whenever there's a major event in the ring, it triggers others along the ring..
edit on 22-6-2011 by miniatus because: (no reason given)

You realize that geologists no longer use the Richter scale don't you?

Earthquakes do not set off chain reactions around the world either.

Please provide facts to back that up. According to the USGS, only one quake struck. Here is a list of ALL quakes of magnitude 2.5 and higher for the day:

Look at the USGS USA Earthquake Map. It shows quite a few quakes in the Yellowstone area. I know you guys are looking at the daily quakes, but I'm looking at the big picture.

When I see the quakes south of Wyoming in Utah I wonder if those might be related to the magma chamber too. I know it's supposed to be pretty big and cover a large area.

What do you guys think?

Well... here in Utah, we get a lot which or more than likely due to "fracking". With that, yes indeed, mother nature is responsible as well.

Wyoming & Yellowstone... currently it is more than likely weather related and ice melting/shifting. As I mentioned in an earlier post... keep your eye on the big Yellowstone thread. If anything really starts to happen, the good folks in there will alert us all.

And thank you for your comments, they are appreciated!

Hey UtahRoseBud!
I live in Utah too, I have been keeping an eye on Yellowstone, I am one of those pessimistic people, always worried we're all gonna die. LOL... Maybe thats a bit of an overstatement. But I'm sure you're aware of the "Big One" Thats supposed to hit the wasatch front. I'm not sure of your location in Utah, but I live in the Salt Lake Valley. Pretty much for those of you who don't know, a 7 eq is supposed to hit the wasatch front, Tilting the valley, causing liquifaction in the sandy parts of the valley (We're on an old gigantic lake bed) and everyone freaks out on all the local news site boards if theres a report of even the smallest earthquake. My question is Could an earthquake in Utah trigger yellowstone, or vice versa? If so I'm high tailing it out of here, Sadly i don't think there's anywhere safe in the world. lol

Hiya neighbor Asherz! I too am in Salt Lake Valley. East side representing! LOL

Yeah, those folks up on South Mountain and in Draper better watch out... that entire area is the worst, for sure. Anyway... I think you posed some great questions and I can share what my "opinion/personal feelings" are. I am NOT a geologist, so I want to be clear with that. I'm a California girl originally and lived through the 1989 Loma Prieta. Not to mention several other good "shakers" out there.

There are days that I fear Yellowstone and there are days that I don't. However, every single day, I respect her. As for your question on triggering back and forth, I truly believe that is possible. What lies beneath our feet, far down, I feel is all connected. With that, I'm going to link a couple of other threads here on ATS for you. You may or may not be aware of their existence. But they are filled with wonderful information, facts and theories. And our resident ATS respected experts visit them and will answer questions and concerns.

Don't let the length of this thread scare you. Granted it is filled to the brim with fantastic information, however if you prefer in jumping to the end and posting questions or just to join into the conversation, you will be welcomed.

What's Going On At Yellowstone - ATS Thread

And then this one... which personally I find fascinating and informative. Not to mention, it makes sense (to me).
