Utah man updates Facebook status during standoff with SWAT

An armed Valdez, 36, held a woman hostage at a motel in a tense 16-hour, overnight standoff with SWAT teams, all while finding time to keep his family and friends updated on Facebook, authorities said.

He even got some help from the outside over the social network: A friend posted that a SWAT officer was hiding in the bushes.

"Thank you homie," Valdez replied. "Good looking out."

When officers swarmed the room, Valdez shot himself in the chest with a handgun, Ogden police said. On Tuesday, he was in critical condition.

I cant help but laugh at this. Update you facebook status with having a standoff with SWAT? I wonder how many people decided to add him as a friend?

In all, Valdez made six posts and added at least a dozen new friends.

"I'm currently in a standoff ... kinda ugly, but ready for whatever," Valdez wrote in his first post at 11:23 p.m. "I love u guyz and if I don't make it out of here alive that I'm in a better place and u were all great friends."

After that, a couple hours went by, then he resorted to taking pictures and uploading them onto facebook.

"Got a cute `Hostage' huh," Valdez wrote of the photographs

At 3:48 a.m., one of Valdez' friends posted that police had a `gun ner in the bushes stay low." Valdez thanked him in a reply.

Well, thats the funniest stuff in the article.

Authorities are now discussing whether some of Valdez' friends should be arrested and charged with obstruction of justice for hampering a police investigation. "We're not sure yet how to deal with it," said Croyle.

If only he had twitter.....

Strange decision of Valdez

It is a funny article, and I understand what the OP finds funny about it, so thanks for posting it.

But the truth of the matter is that in a stand-off like that...well, 16 hours passes *slow* if not much is going on but alertness. Whipping out the mobile phone and firing off some messages probably didn't seem that strange to the man at the time. Don't underestimate the profound significance of doing something "normal" in a stressful time. Not to support this man's actions, of course. But I don't find it that unbelievable that he could find time to fiddle with his mobile phone during the standoff.

Makes more sense to shoot yourself in the heart. Cause you can always shoot yourself in the head and miss the right spot and then end up a vegetable, or in even more pain than you can think of. That way your are 100% going to die.

And in the swat van ,nothing but porn with no friends added

People have been losing their minds since there were people. Point is the guy was a scum bag so he deserved it. It said hes been charged with domestic violence in front of a child. That shouldn't be tolerated.

Your heart is covered by bone its called your chest plate and rib cage, bone has been known to make smaller rounds bounce inside the body 22 cal effect. Not the best idea for killing your self. Your temples on the side of your head are the best spot don't put a gun in your mouth unless you want to live and be disfigured as well unless its a shotgun and even then i wouldn't chance it. Case and point he is still alive in critical condition with a hole in his chest being a vegetable you are legally brain dead but some how i doubt he would miss using his brain i don't think he has ever used it.
