The Shiite uprising in the southern portion of Iraq resulted in the Iraqi interim government suspending 90% of its production today. Al-Sadr' militants have threatened to attack Basra' oil infrastucture,
suspending 90% of Iraq' oil exports.

IRAQ stopped pumping oil from its key southern oil fields today because of the violence plaguing the region during a renewed Shiite uprising, an official with the South Oil Company said.

About 1.8 million barrels per day, or 90 per cent of Iraq's exports, move through Iraq's southern port of Basra, and any shutdown in the flow of Iraq's main money earner would badly hamper reconstruction efforts.

A senior official with the oil company, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the southern oil fields stopped pumping oil today after militants loyal to Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr threatened to target the oil infrastructure in Basra.

Basra tense as troops, militia clash
August 10

British forces have fought gun battles with militiamen on the streets of Basra and a military spokeswoman says the situation in Iraq's second largest city is "extremely tense".

Two British military Land Rovers have been set on fire by guerrillas as militiamen loyal to radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr roamed the streets brandishing assault rifles and firing on troops with rocket-propelled grenades.

"There are ongoing engagements, it's certainly a conflict," a spokeswoman for British forces in Basra said.
