The Pit River Tribe hopes to establish a small herd of buffalo near Alturas. Alvarez, councilman for the Hewisedawi Band of the Pit River Tribe, said the buffalo would be a good source of nutritional, low-fat meat.
“Our tribe has a high percentage of diabetes,” he said. “It would be a way to battle the diabetes problem.”
The InterTribal Bison Cooperative, formed in 1990 and made up of 57 tribes, collectively has more than 15,000 bison with herds in different locations, according to the organization’s website.
