Fort Calhoun Nuclear Plant stores radioactive nuke waste in cooling pools on site. When the plants were built, the premise for radioactive waste storage was that it would be sent out to YUCCA MOUNTAIN for permanent disposal, and the cooling ponds would only be for a temporary storage until they could be transported out to Yucca Mt..

The Obama administration stopped the Yucca Mt. Repository Project and now all nuke plants have to store all their waste on site. That was never meant to be! While the NRC is saying that there is no problem with the "plant", there may be a significant problem brewing with the stored nuke waste. It's piling up! The general public just goes by the condition of the plant and doesn't worry when there can be a very significant radiation hazard about to unravel.

When flooding occurs the cooling ponds which contain the stored material can overflow. Other radioactive spent rods are stored outside in cement caskets, that can crack or in the event of a tornado be destroyed. The flood water becomes contaminated with the radioactive cooling water. This water gets into the Missouri under these conditions and contaminates the river with radiation. This same scenario can be applied to the nuke plants along the Mississippi River too. We don't consider that there are 15 nuke plants along the Mississippi River and 104 in the USA. Even if only a few plants have radioactive breaches, that's a big problem! With all the rain and flooding along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, this has to be a real concern if you understand the impact.

According to the Weather Channel the Ft. Calhoun, and Cooper nuke plants are included in a severe weather watch again today which covers eastern Nebraska. Their severe weather expert Dr. Forbes has placed a TOR CON value of 8/10 on the area for today. TOR CON is a measure of the probability of tornadoes within a 50 mile radius. The value 8/10 means that there is a 80% chance of tornadoes within 50 miles of Omaha, Ne. The Weather Channel is predicting long tracking tornadoes for the area today along with the severe weather and heavy rain. We have seen what tornadoes did in Joplin. It would do significant damage to nuke plants if one was to hit.

In addition, WOWT reports that there are significant problems developing with levees upstream on the Missouri due to tremendous snow melt from the mountains. They report holes in levees getting bigger, and water leaking under levees as well. This could be BAD!! Stay Safe Everybody!!

So this is the first time this plant has witnessed severe weather since it was put in operation, is that what you're suggesting? .. they couldn't possibly have fathomed that there could ever be heavy rains or a tornado?

The paranoia seems to be without justification.. just like the other nuke plant posts.. people are inventing disasters that haven't happened and may not ever happen..

I don't mind caution but it can get out of hand when it hits paranoia levels
