I think it would have been really cool they would have had 6 new people to take the spot of the first 6 people that got arrested. Than when the second group of people got arrested, another group step up and take there place. And just kept going.

Maybe while they were there, they could have been getting signatures to abolish/ammend the law. I don't know how that all works as I have never done that before.

But the standing around making snide remarks to the police officers doesn't make them look too good in my eyes. It's almost like they are there for that more than feeding the homeless......

Just some thoughts.....

Being an SS officer was just a job too.

By all means, go after the ones who make the laws. But enforcing said laws make one just as implicit.

And blowing up people in other countries is just a job too.

You want to throw in the KKK and the constitution for some obscure reason now too?

That doesn't really matter.

What does matter or should matter to you is how you come across here when you side with the paramilitaries.

I don't understand that comment. I didn't side with anyone. I voiced my opinion. I didn't say either parties were right. I just said what I thought would be cool.

I don't understand how you got what you got from my full post.

Maybe you could clarify???

For all those who keep crying about "it's the law" and people should follow the law, I think you are being very short sighted.

Prior to the Civil Rights Movement States had Racial Segregation Laws. Had people not purposely violated those laws, would there have been a Civil Rights Movement?

What we are seeing from these people who are purposely feeding the homeless and expecting to be arrested for it is nothing more than civil disobedience. For all the people on this site who say violence is not the way to force change, I find it amazing that so many are also condemning non violent civil disobedience. For those who are siding with the police and this obviously stupid law, I would like to ask you just what do you expect people to do? If non violent civil disobedience is no good, if violence is not good, what do YOU suggest? Certainly your not suggesting people fight within the already corrupt system to force change? That is something we already know does not work. People have been trying that for decades to no avail, so what do you really suggest?

Nice deflection attempt.

What I gave was an example which you can't refute.

Truth or not: Were the SS just doing their jobs?

No one said the homelessness was the fault of the officers.

And yes, I resigned from my position as Sergeant. I ended my career because of crap like this.

No, but they have the option to not enforce laws.

The "just doing their job" excuse is flimsy at best.

Didn't the concentration camp guards use that excuse?

Really? Corrupt or not - - that is how our country is run. And when people unite together to change laws - - it is effective.

This law is probably because there are more people who want it then don't.

I know Santa Monica CA tried to accommodate and leave the homeless alone. But they became so aggressive - - laws had to be made to keep them out of the heavier foot traffic areas. Which sounds similar to this area.

One time when I was in Santa Monica a teen girl became very pushy begging me for money. I told her "I'm sorry - but I only have a $10 bill". She grabbed me by the arm and tried to drag me into a store so I could make change.

My friend carries McDonald "meal books" (I think they're cards now) to give to the homeless. That way he feels they have to use them to actually eat.

Since I lean socialist - - I definitely support there should be places the homeless can get relief and at least a bowl of soup.

But I'm also realistic - - I'm not going to knee-jerk an emotional reaction to a situation I don't have full knowledge of.

Oh yeah - - you are absolutely placing the officer in the place of responsibility for these homeless people - - by suggesting he refuse to do his job.

You quit your job in this economy with how many kids at home to feed? Because you were asked to do something you didn't like?

I am not going to address this. Stay in the present.

It was a different time - - different circumstance. During those years here in America cops regularly beat up people too - - legally.

I quit a $50,000 a year job too because of integrity. So what.

And I'm an Atheist. I didn't need Christ.

Whenever I show any disagreement with the police, I am always hit by the same ole "some cops are bad, 90% are good" How on earth are 90% of them good, when 90% of the laws that they enforce are bad and unconstitutional? I just do not understand the mentality of a law like this. These police should be giving these people that civilian version of the medal of honor, I forgot what it is called. Total garbage.

How exactly is that making the police officer responsible fore the homelessness?

4 kids and a wife. I resigned 5 years ago.

And I resigned over principles. But I would not expect you to understand something like that.

Quit making excuses, Annee.

Or did people "in a different time" not need to have a career or a job?

I somehow find it hard to believe that you quit your job because of integrity, yet you scoff at the idea of these men quitting their job for the same.

Effective? IT is so effective that states have continued to make new statutes and laws that get people arrested who have not hurt anyone. If that is your idea of effective, it is a huge failure. Furthermore, what would you have said to Martin Luther King? What would you have said to Rosa Parks? Do not practice non violent civil disobedience because it is wrong? It was at the core of what Ghandi said as well. Was he wrong? I would say the evidence says you are wrong, because those 3 people did effectively make change happen through non violent civil disobedience.

This law is probably because there are more people who want it then don't.

I suggest reading through some of the other threads on this subject. One of the members here did manage to find the details surrounding this law and what you are suggesting is false. Most people did not want this law. I would find the link for you, but I am at work right now and just do not have the time.

The problem is, what happens when more and more people turn up to get their free food, before you know it, the situation spirals out of control and you have major public disorder. Thats why it is naive to think that they should be allowed to carry out this sort of thing. It encourages tramps and vagrancy and unlawfulness. Not only that, but it also dissolves the state of their responsibility for feeding the people. This is why they SHOULD be arrested.

Having availed Myself of many a free meal, having been homeless, I know You are talking out Your nether region here.

It does NOT "encourage... tramps and vagrancy and unlawfulness." The inability to get a job does THAT for us. Now We should not be turning Our backs on these victims of the economy. Just imagine the food stolen because these hungry were not fed. FAILING to feed Them encourages unlawfulness.

How inHuman to disallow compassion.

Ever see the signs "Do not feed the animals"? Now I am not saying that the hungry are animals, but just that there is a similar reasoning at work here. Feeding them discourages them from fending for themselves. Great! so a bunch of do gooders put their party hats and funny face make up on and get in their food charriot and go enjoy themselves for a few days. Then they get bored, and decide maybe they will take that once yearly cruise around the world this year after all. Who feeds the hungry then?
