The ATF was not arming Mexican drug lords.

Yeah they were. From their own officers and documents and own statements, it was the goal. Arming them so they could ``find`` the weapons so they could take down cartel leaders.

So now you are for cracking down on these purchases?

Yeah because it's not like they didn't see those purchases... they MADE SURE THE GUNS WOULD END UP IN DRUG CARTELS HANDS.

Or is it just a matter of shifting opinions? whatever can be spun as anti-Obama?

Obviously you haven't be here long. I've been here since 2004... and from 2004-2009 and still today, I bashed Bush's crimes day after day.

Please clarify your position as to what laws you feel should be in place and enforced to restrict straw purchases and trafficking of guns to Mexico.

Second amendment as it was in 1933. The ATF should be disbanded, they have done enough crimes, mistakes and unconstitutional things since they were created.

As for who gets guns... criminals will get guns no matter the laws, so let law abiding citizen get guns if they want to. Open carry legal. Concealed carry need a permit.

Legalize all drugs, punish severely corruption at all levels, bring back the troops and put them on the border with Mexico... and this will solve the Mexican drug cartels arms problem.

Return Fire

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) is facing heavy criticism for an operation that has apparently gone terribly wrong. Operation Fast and Furious (also known in the media as operation Gunwalker) was supposed to be a covert operation that would use weapon sales (from monitored U.S. sources to Mexico) as a means of gaining information about drug cartel activities then penetrating the cartels. Law enforcement agents would track the buyers and track the weapons. It didn’t turn out that way. U.S. agents lost track of the weapons and the weapons started being used to commit major crimes, including murdering a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Arizona. The operation ultimately involved some 2,000 weapons (a lot of weapons), including AK-47 type assault rifles and .50 caliber sniper rifles. A U.S. congressional committee is investigating the operation. Allegedly, 150 Mexican security personnel were killed by weapons that came through the Fast and Furious program.

Brilliant. 2000 weapons. .50 sniper rifles. Killed at least one American, 150 Mexican police/army... and who knows how many civilians they killed with those weapons.

ABOLISH THE BATF ALREADY. Should have been done a long time ago.

Two hundred years ago, all involved would have swung for treason.
But in the New Corporate States of America, folks just lose their job and then go to work for another company.
Not enough people care is the problem.

I would partially disagree. People are powerless now, that is also the problem. What are you going to do against a corporation? Even if you get a lot of people angry and mobilized, closest you can ever get to anything resembling justice is a class-action lawsuit. Then your suit and their suit sits in court for 2 years and maybe at best you take a small fraction of their profits. Whoopie?

We don't have a justice system, we have a legal system.

My absolute favorite part of this whole mess is when the ATF was asked "how" they would use the arming of cartels to take down the heads they had absolutely no idea.

As if nobody with the bureau bothered to actually think their plan through to the next step.

Yay government.

Now there's a thought! Is this really a government we should be afraid of after all?

The BATF has been pulling some pretty grimey things since, oh the Clinton administration.
The biggest problem with the Mexican gun thing is the fact that the cartels have military grade weapons. Not the kinda of arms a typical US citizen could buy. Despite what the fools in the media will tell you AK's are the major export of China [shoddly made], Russia [high quality] and Romania. The ones built here require conversion to be full auto. Not terribly difficult to do but requires a bit of knowledge to perform. So who has access to military grade weapons??? The Mexican military!!! Quite a large amount of their weapons are stolen by soldiers who join the cartels. Pre-trained and comes with his own weapon, hmm......
