So apperntly the CIA has fallen victim to hacking. Is this the work of a pro-people hacking group (Lulz, Anon etc) bringing down the CIA ? or simply the government creating a fake threat to propel harsher internet regulations ?

A report from Reuters is indicating that hacker group Lulz Security (LulzSec) broke into a public portion of the Senate website over a weekend and claimed responsibility for that attack in a Tweet Monday. Now, for the second time in a week, the group has broken into a public senate site and downloaded information.

“They’re getting nothing but the attacks continue,” Senate sergeant at arms Martina Bradford told Reuters, “We’ve been able to stay ahead of the hackers and keep them out of the main Senate network.”

In addition to the Senate website the LulzSec group, which has yet to claim this latest hack, has also performed attacks on the International Monetary Fund and Lockheed Martin, Citigroup, Google and Michaels stores.

At this time, CIA.gov, the official site of the Central Intelligence Agency, is also unresponsive to browsing. LulzSec has seemed to claim responsibility for the CIA site going down with this Tweet, posted Wednesday evening PST, stating “Tango down - CIA.gov – for the lulz.”.

Are you claiming that the CIA would only bring down their site if told by the president ? ... if so, either Obama did this -_- or Lulz

Ok, so these "freedom fighters" want to attack Govt. websites right after Pentagon calls it a cyber war?
And some of you people call them noble organizations?

Why not last presidential term, why only after Obama's Kill Switch and why on after the Pentagon said it's acts of war?

People really need to stop listening to the manifesto of these hacktivists and start looking at their actions.

Where is the skepticism?
This is not being a conspiracy theorist, this is just following whatever masquerades itself as the opposition!
Stalin spoke of leading the opposition and history repeats itself.

Wake Up!!!!!

all i hear is fear, the fear your downloads arent possible anymore and your internetz activity is monitored so your posts here or wherever will bring you into trouble...

and thats what we need to fight for, no gov shell be able to do so and the actions are just a response, it was not hacking gov -> kill switch, they came up with all this IBAN/Swift, webpage censorship kill switch stuff before the take down of their institutions took place...

Why would LulzSec take their own website down?

I do agree that a certain level of skepticism is necessary and that the timing does seem odd... but do we have many options ? Even if this a government psyop situation ... it is getting people to think about the problems with our gov, which is something we ALL need.

It's highly unlikely in fact almost guaranteed, that nothing of value is stored within their public facing site. A zero-day against their web server could easily take them down. Other than some inconvenience on the cia's part this is just a brief show of force. Expect more government sites to go down though, for the lulz of course

I agree with Grey Magic here it is simply another website that they have taken down here, nothing bigger than that plain and simple.

Though it does make me laugh hahahaha as the government is probably pissed off as hell that this has happened.

Good for LulzSec, keep it up something needs to be done against the government, and so far the only thing that has been done is these hackers. I support you!

To those who are still able to open the CIA website: it's probable that your browser is opening a cached version of the site.
It is down...

So are they actually hacking into it or simply D-Dos'ing it?
crashing the server by bombarding it with legion requests?

It's "just" a denial-of-service. The connection times-out.
No fancy messages or anything even remotely interesting. Just "This webpage is not available."
