General Gul is obviously a Pakistani. I could tell just from the thread title.
Do you know how I could tell? It’s because Pakistan’s biggest enemies (according to its own paranoid perception) are India and Israel.
India, because (1) it’s a well-governed secular state from which Pakistan seceded, (2) it’s a success while Pakistan is the world’s most
egregious failure as a nation-state, and (3) because Pakistan has made war on India four times, and four times has been humiliatingly defeated.
Israel, for no better reason than that Pakistanis, like Palestinians, are Muslims, and Israel is the Islamic world’s favourite whipping-boy. The
whipping may be deserved but that is neither here nor there.
For years, the United States has propped Pakistan up for its own strategic purposes. Lately, however, American policymakers have become increasingly
convinced of the folly of supporting this ungrateful, intractable, fissiparous, dangerous nation, and have lately begun taking a tougher line with
Pakistan.
The Pakistani military, which was receiving billions in US aid, is a big loser in this change of policy.
And that is enough for a senior Pakistani military officer (whether active or retired one neither knows nor cares) to claim that India and Israel are
directing US foreign policy. Please don’t forget that the Pakistani army nurtures Islamic militant groups, masterminds terror attacks on foreign
soil and regularly topples democratically elected governments when they don’t do what it tells them.
This claim is so predictable and obviously false I can’t imagine anyone but a Pakistani believing it. And even a Pakistani will only believe it
because he desperately wants to. How come you ladies or gentlemen, most of whom appear to be American, are taking this tripe so seriously?
