I believe I have the answer to your question, "Why can't you feed the homeless in the Orlando area." I live in Orlando and very familiar with the location they were arrested. There are 8 homeless shelters within a six square block area of where the arrests occurred. We frequently donate to those shelters to help the hungry in Orlando but unfortunately, a very high percentage of those being fed are convicted child molesters, drunks and drug addicts. I took my daughter to a park near there and have witnessed some of these homeless talking to kids until parents pull them away. Since then, the police ask every parent standing near the playground to point out their children or they would have to leave. I believe that because there are numerous shelters near by and plenty of food, they are trying to protect the public. I am all for helping those in need, but you would have to see the characters who hang around there. They are so high or drunk that they walk around confused. I saw a homeless man with his son and I sparked up a conversation with him. He told me he cannot hold a job because of mental issues. He was dressed in black dirty dress pants with holes in them and his shirt was stained, wrinkled and dirty. My wife and I decided to give him the new clothes we purchased for myself for Easter. He kindly took them and walked directly to the restrooms and changed. The pants were long but otherwise fit him well. He came out and told his son that he needed to take him to his grandmothers home so he can go job hunting. We felt good helping this man because he deserved it.
Last year, a homeless man in downtown Orlando was holding a sign that said hungry, I had to come back that way after running an errand so I stopped at McDonalds and bought him a Big Mac meal. When I pulled up next to him and handed him the food, he replied," I don't want that garbage, I want cash!!!" I was furious that he could be so rude. His breath ranked of alcohol and his eyes couldn't even focus on me. I am sure Orlando is trying to get rid of these types. Trust me when I tell you, there are hundreds of drunks out there causing trouble and Orlando does not want to attract any more.

These scumbag law enforcers have forgotten what it means to be good to their fellow man.

It's a ridiculous law, but blasting the cops for following orders is a bit over the top don't you think? What do you think would happen if you hand-picked orders from your own boss? These orders come from the top. I'm sure the police officers aren't thrilled about arresting people for feeding the homeless, but I'm sure they have bills to pay as well...

DamngI feel sorry for you! Animals? Some ppl don't choose that lifestyle however some do! But animals? A 12 year old boy that ran from a foster home because he was molested and is now staying in the subway station is an animal?

s&f- nice post. Seems like an easy way around this law is to have the people gather in a general area to feed them, but separate themselves by say 10-15'. then each person is individually getting fed.also, the "crowd" of homeless would look much bigger to passers by.lol

But this isn't just a matter of feeding hungry people is it? The heading makes it sound as though the authorities are trying to stop help being given to homeless people. There's so much 'spin' in that, the author should be a politician! In fact it's an action by the group 'food not bombs'' which is trying to make a political point by using public parks as a gathering point. They are using homeless people as pawns which is pretty disgusting.
You can't tell me there aren't food projects in Orlando - and in other than a public park. I note people just ignored Malachi, the poster who lives in Orlando and who actually might have a clue what is going on? You wouldn't want the facts to rain on your conspiracy parade after all...

There are so many homeless people in America and soon every American will be homeless, well that's the governments plan. Unfortunately for the government the homeless have rights too, for crying out loud they are no different from you or me or even Obama; were all animals. So if there is a revolution then the homeless are in for sure. That is why they must not be fed food.

Have you even read this thread? Or did you read the OP title,and then jump to the end and post a reply? This is not about arresting people for feeding a bum. This has nothing to do with feeding the homeless, it has everything to do with anti war protesters exploiting the homeless to gain media time to promote the real agenda.

You know what it's about to me?

It's about police state style tactics TOTALLY reminiscent of brutal dictatorships globally throughout history, to just send out a squad and round some people up within under 2-3minutes time (need to be fast to round up tons of ppl throughout the day you know).

It was incredibly efficient and effective. I was amazed at the skill and speed by which these silly bicycle cops with their wagon were able to take control of a situation, make arrests, and be out of there.

This is something from what you expect to see in the USSR or PRC, where the government just rounds tons of people up on a grand scale.

Also it reminds me of the dystopian future envisioned in games and books and movies. Basically everyone gets arrested and people "disappear".

I agree it's not happening to this extreme degree just yet in America. I don't think many people are getting "disappeared" just yet. But within 10-20 years? Sure, I think it's totally possible.

It is the Path we are on after all, towards complete tyranny. If the people do not rise up and stop this train wreck, it will eventually happen.

Do you really want to see a future where kids don't even know their parents or siblings, they have little identity, and are rounded up like cattle in the streets? Sounds pretty ridiculous right?

Well not to derail this topic into a political discussion, as every thread on ATS seems to do. But are you saying you prefer anarchy? Where if I want to setup a homeless shelter, I am free to come to your house and setup shop on your front lawn? If so tell me where you live and ill be there ASAP. As I have pointed out many times, this was not "Jackbooted Thugs" rounding up law abiding citizens just trying to help the needy. This was your average police man arresting a group of activists, that have resorted to breaking laws for the sole purpose of getting media attention for their cause. And in the process of doing this they are exploiting the homeless to gain this end. The have no real compassion for the homeless or they would not be wasting this time and money on frivolous protests. They instead would move their soup kitchen 3 blocks away from the city park, and setup a permanent spot where the homeless could go for a meal. They are using the homeless as pawns in a political game, and forcing the city police to respond, just to create this type of controversy. All they care about is getting their organizations name on the television, to try and rally support for their cause. Which in the long run cares nothing for the homeless and needy. They have demonstrated this by wasting so many resources on this farce of a protest.

I have stated before, I am not against their anti war protesting. I just can't see why they have to exploit the homeless to do so. Setup picket marches, buy billboard space. And yes if they want televised coverage, run an actual television add. All of these would be far better uses of their money than paying bail, legal fees, and fines. And most importantly, if they really care to help the homeless, spend this money and time on doing so, not staging phony soup kitchen "massacres" to gain media attention.

The multiple Youtube videos very obviously proves otherwise: There was a group arrested while they were trying to help the homeless. Then there were more groups arrested while they were feeding the homeless. Who are you to draw the boundaries on exactly what minor details they are using to get the help accomplished?

From what I understand the people feeding the homeless have been doing so for years, so I don't understand the claims of how this is something new they were doing just to get arrested. You're welcome to enlighten me about how this is their fault in some way.

Soooo... people you don't approve of should be left to starve and die? Wow, great way to convict people and then punish them without a trial. Thank God you're not in charge of protecting me. Or maybe you are for all I know. You sound like you could be a politician: one minute you "help" people and on the other you support slapping them in the face and treating them like sub-human cattle.

Even if they were convicted of child molestation... their sentences appear to be up. Meaning if they are starving maybe they are still a human being who could use a handout of food every now and then since clearly they very well may never get a job after a conviction like that on their record.

There is simply no excuse for a rule that prevents someone from feeding homeless people, and its not for you to decide that if the person is too shady then they don't get any food.

6/15/11 6 more activist arrested in Orlando for Sharing food with the hungry. 2 young children are being served as close to 20 police officers swarm in and arrest the food servers. This brings to total number of arrest for this horrendous crime up to 21 people within a two week time period!

OK, the question is, do you stand under them or are you a person? I would never obey them at all.

The effect this law has on keeping the homeless away is minor in comparison to the effect of it showing the character of the people who create and enforce it. It is just a plain inhumane and irresponsible way of dealing with a problem that any city government would handle at a certain point, it should be noted during the next elections. (Which is hopefully more than a popularity contest)

Spoke To A Homeless Man Yesterday: Could We Change Things From The Bottom Up?

Those who are out of the middle class loop/bubble of forced enslavement, and those that are on the lower floor of this system, working at wages that don't even provide both accomodation and nutrition for them or their families all need to stop pointing fingers at each other, and drop the stigma, come forward with dignity, and not be fearful, though humility is a big part of this, and feeling both unequal, and that all will put them down, if they work for change, whereas some will, but some won't and so like any other issue there is an education/awareness curve that needs addressing, and standing up with dignity.

But I believe real change needs to come from the bottom up.
