Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and those behind her are trying to force a carbon tax on Australians. It has been very popular amongst the more elite and wealthy and in the confusion of what it's really all about the average, educated Australian is finding it difficult to get real facts and come to an informed opinion.

Up till now. Australians are very suspiscious of authority and it is beginning to show on this issue. Very few now seem to believe in anthropogenic climate change. The issue of a carbon tax in Australia was not brought to the last election and Gillard is pretty much a lame duck. It's astounding they think they can pull this off how things are, let alone if they actually had a mandate.

This link is more for the comments, it's awesome to see the change in peoples conditioning. It's wearing off - at least on this issue.

An essential Service like electrical power was once a government owned operation.

Probably because our elders knew that this could not be left in the hands of profit driven business men.

Then they privatized it to save cash.

The public now pays for their infrastructure costs, and soon a carbon tax passed through as well.

We should nationalize it all again.

Don't they know there is an ice age coming? We need to pump out the green house gasses, not reduce them. Just think, ice age means no bikinis.

Thank-you for discussing this issue OP, I myself am a young Australian who strongly opposes this carbon tax/scheme/trading/pricing or whatever they now call it.

We live in a society where its becomming apparant that neither liberal or labour are worth voting for, a trend that was very well illustrated in our last election, and I imagine the next election will be an even greater fiasco.

I read an interestin statistic not to long ago that pointed out the fact that ther average Australian citizen produces .000000015% of the worlds carbon emisions, and that as a nation we contribute to 1.5%. Were a tax introduced, I don't understand how reducing 1.5%, even by half will do anything to curb 'man made' climate change.

Climate change which I belive has nothing to do with the actions of man at all. To state that the Earth's climate is out of control due to carbon is obsurd, when you consider the climate never stops changing and that carbon is the basis for all life, period.

My grandmother always said that we would one day pay for the air we breathe, and it seems that she may be right if nothing is done to stop this out of control government.

Why I love Australia

The people rock. I can’t recall anywhere I’ve been where it’s so easy to make jokes and small talk with people I didn’t know. And it’s not the chilly polite vibe I so often find in America (even in Seattle), it’s this totally warm, friendly, isn’t life funny, knowing vibe. When Australians say no worries, it’s pretty convincing that they believe it, and as a traveler it’s a delight.

This really pisses me off.

After Ms Gillard promised us that there wouldn't be a carbon tax she implements it at the first available opportunity against the will of the voters.

I personally think that Abbot is an effin joke of a politician (when Howie was in office, any questions asked of Mr Abbot during Question Time were skirted with his condescending attitude despite the average voters concerns for the issues raised. Almost always, the retort would end up as an attack at the ALP) but I will be voting for the LIB in the next election.

As to the carbon farce, as an engineer I can honestly say that I think that a carbon tax will do nothing for the environment. I will be the first to admit that we have been trashing our planet for way too long, but what we need is a solution to combat all pollution, not just carbon, but chemical, industrial & household waste as well.

I think the biggest issue WRT our planet is the tree situation.

It is widely known and documented that we have removed more than 70% of the trees on our planet to date and it is projected that by the year 2030, we will have 10% of the natural forests of the planet left.

Yet no-one in either major political party in Australia gives a crap about the tree situation because it won't win votes, most of the damage is done in other countries and Australian politicians are too scared(gut-less) to "rock the boat".

There is no doubt that carbon levels in the atmosphere and oceans are rising... but IMHO this is an effect, NOT a cause.

if a enough people oppose it, it will force a resolution.

they are really sneakyky on this one, yet blatant in their tactic. The OP has mentioned people are waking up... YES, they are...

Gillard is the worst thing to happen to Australia.

At least with communism there is no choice, so no one can blame anyone.

Greens are the problem in this country.....

I am over the media TELLING me that most Australians are in support of Climate Change. This to me and in talking to others is total bs. Most I know agree that we are not doing good to Mother, but general opinion is that its a natural cycle.
I am over the inaction, especially since we are being told that we could all die within the next few years if we do nothing - YET - We still see our Gov cutting trees down, approving more oil drills and rigs (both on and off shore. Some of these on shore places are pristine forests and landscapes), approving more gas drills, hiding the high pollutant industries (like the aluminum industry and excluding them from any carbon taxes), more coal mines - you have it as a high pollutant and Australia will approve it.
Then we have the Gov fighting like little bloody children because of the lack of indecision within our Government. I am over the whole kit and caboodle......
I am against this tax and will fight to stop it. Over their BS as well.
Just on a side note for every person that is on this earth, to ensure a clean healthy earth, we must have at least 2 trees per person, and they are chopping them down fast everywhere (and its very blatant here in Canberra).

Actually it was....
Gillard said quite clearly many times,
"There will be NO CARBON TAX under a Gillard Government.."

She will not be allowed to forget that FACT!!

The one issue in all this that isnt spoken about publibly is the fact that a Carbon (I mean Carbon Dioxide - the correct term all the supporters of the tax refuse to use) Tax is really a cover for a socialist style wealth re-distribution program.

All the talk of compensation and how the variable amounts of compensation compared to how much you earn are really talking about everyone being on a level playing field...Communist Socialist Style.

Showing her true roots from her years in the local Socialist ASctivist Networks that she was in at Uni.

This will remove any incentive to work hard or to go for a better job as the more you earn the less you will get compensated for the carbo "Dioxide" tax. So you may as well stay at work and get the full compensation amount...

this a a major scam and she will not last to the next election.

Why the hell the Governor general doesnt step in and force her to take the issue to a new election beats the hell out of me and show utter gutlessness on her (GG) position of authority.

just my opinion.
